Grading Policy

Grading
All assignments will be graded on a 100 point scale. Rounding will be taken into account.
A = 90 - 100%
B = 80 - 89%
C = 75 - 79%
D = 70 - 74%
F = 0 - 69%

All grades will be separated into four categories and are weighted accordingly:
Weekly playing tests (25%)
Rehearsals (25%)
Worksheets/Homework (20%)
Performances, Concerts, and UIL Contest (30%)

Weekly Playing Tests (25%)

There will be weekly playing tests for each instrument section. Playing tests will be assigned the
week before by the band directors. Material assigned may include but is not limited to scales,
technique studies, lyrical studies, tudes, and concert music. Each section will play on their
assigned day during their registered band period for a band director who is not running
ensemble rehearsal.

Monday - Flutes and Trumpets

Tuesday - Clarinets and F Horn
Wednesday - Saxes and Trombones
Thursday - Low Reeds, Euphoniums, and Tubas
Friday - Percussion

If you miss a playing test on your assigned day you will be given a 0 (zero) for the assignment,
even if you are absent. If your absence in question is unexcused, the 0 will remain and cannot
be made up. If your absence in question is excused, you may make up your playing test. The
playing test must be made up on or before the second day of your return to school during
class.
Rehearsals (25%)
All rehearsals and sectionals/masterclasses are required for both marching and concert
seasons. You will receive a grade for every rehearsal. Every instrument requires different
accessories, therefore you must come to rehearsals with all necessary materials/tools for your
instrument to have a successful rehearsal. This includes but is not limited to mutes, reeds, valve
oil, and mallets. You must bring your music folder to every rehearsal even if we are working on
memorization. You must have a pencil with you during rehearsals. Failure to bring any
necessary materials with you to rehearsal will result in a deduction from your rehearsal grade.

Worksheets and Written Assignments (20%)

Theory worksheets and other written assignments will be given periodically. Due date for each
assignment is at the discretion of the band director who assigned the material. Assignments
are due at the beginning of the class period. Assignments need to be in the basket next to the
directors office. There will be a 10 point deduction each day the assignment is late.

Concerts and UIL Contest (30%)

Band performances such as football games, marching contest/festivals, concerts, and UIL
contest are mandatory. You will receive a 100 if you perform or 0 if you are absent from the
performance. Parent contact will be made if you are absent form a performance. A 0 will
remain unless there is a legitimate reason for your absence.
