RIVE-SUD P-8 SCHOOL
This design project proposes a centralized building for the
contemporary development of rural public primary schools in Nova
Scotia. An important component of childhood education still largely
left out of schools at present is the ability for collaborative learning
in technologically adaptable buildings that directly respond to a
particular set of site conditions and context. This design project uses
the trees as a driving tool to spatially organize a primary school with
a focus on collaborative learning spaces and childrens reconnection
with nature. The environment is further used to determine materiality,
structure and envelope, and types of play spaces across the site.

encourage connections across age divides.

Through this design project, the scale of the entrance of the school
has been critically analyzed and reduced to create a welcoming
environment at the scale and level of the child. Below are images
of the evolution of the scale of the front entrance throughout the
design process.

A
learning by slightly changing the dynamic of the control model and
making the school design more progressive. The hallways expand
towards the learning common spaces at the ends of the building,
encouraging spill out learning spaces into the corridor from the
designated learning common spaces themselves.

B The end spaces of the building were left open and largely
underprogrammed. Because these spaces are desirable in terms
of their views and natural qualities and relationship with the trees, A
they have been designated as common learning spaces that can
be used by all grade levels for varying activities.

C The main circulation core in the building is located in between

the two forms of the building. As users of the building ascend or
descend through the building, they are taken towards the trees and
then away again as they use the stairs. The climactic space of the
stairs, the landings, are located at the closest point between the
inside of the building and the outdoor environment.

ASSEMBLY AND INSERTION NATURAL CORK JOINT KIT OF PARTS CORK FREELAB
The cork freelab was completed in Lisbon, Portugal in accordance

was intended to test the structural properties of cork composite

and natural cork. Thus, this collapsable and transportable cork
dome was designed. The joints were designed as non-structural
elements that would permit the collapsibility and foldability of
the structure. Thus, natural cork was used for its strength and
was reinforced with cork stoppers and wooden bars. The joint
design was the key to the design of the dome. The structure was
the strength of the cork composite pieces as they rested on one
another.

LUNENBURG HOUSE
Situated in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, this duplex design is
inspired by the traditional gable roof silhouette present in

houses in a mixed use complex by using one building for public

services of a household and the other building for private
services. The two buildings are connected by bridges in the
centre that act as a threshold, illuminated by a skylight which
insinuates passage and accentuates the transition of program.

page 7
STRUCTURAL SYSTEM
This design project uses timber space trusses. By angling the walls
obliquely in accordance with the necessary spacing and throat gaps
required for the truss structure, the small living space is maximized
and the effect of a vaulted loft ceiling is achieved. over the gathering
space of the public dining zone of the household.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC
The corner of University Avenue and Robie Street is a loaded

rhythmical patterns and an intersection point between Danlhousie

University and the city of Halifax. This design project takes a strong
position on site with respect to its massing and internal programmatic
arrangments. The project is split into two programmatic masses
that cater to students and the public separately. The two
programs are connected by a central atrium and circulation core.
The two program masses are represented through weightness
and transparency of materials on the facade. The educational
program envelope consists of a heavy, opaque precast concrete
panel system. Contrastingly, the public program envelope is a
light triple glazed curtain wall with a delicate horizontal louvre.

experience. Music education is predominantly an independent and

solitary study. One of the major social aspects of music education is
performance. Students, faculty, and public are brought together for
musical performances, held in performance halls and auditoriums in
the building. This project pushes the functionality and use of these
formal and informal performance spaces as locations for gathering
and social interaction. Found along the central longitudinal axis of
the building, all of the performance spaces exhibit exposed rakes,

student lounges.
