From: Ninette Cannon, Director AMSTI UAUWA, Greetings, Congratulations on nearing the completion of your coursework at The University of Alabama. You are commended on your hard work toward becoming an educator. | hope that you will consider seeking @ position in a school that supports the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI). Your attendance at three AMSTI professional development days is part of @ plan to cortty you as an AMSTI teacher after graduation, making you eligiale to receive Year 1 AMST! materials upon employment at an AMST! school. ‘The College of Education's elementary mathematics faculty has partnered with AMSTI to fully prepare preservice teachers to teach mathematics to K-5 students through incorporating AMST! philosophies and strategies in standards-based courses. Included are topics such 2s SE inquiry, reflection, cooperative learning, journaling, mathematics notebooks, and assessment. In addition, AMSTI has provided three days of instruction on 3 grade mathematics from Investigations, It is important to know that AMST! preservice certification is managed through the State Department of Education (SDE), AMSTI Section, and is used to provide AMSTI sites with information regarding teachers who are entitled to AMST! services. AMSTI certification does not appear on Professional Educator Certficates and is separate from certification granted by the SDE Teacher Education and Certification section. After you complete requirements for graduation, your name will be submitted by your professor to the SDE where you Will be listed as eligible for Year 1 AMSTI services for 3° grade mathematics. If hired by an AMST! school, this certification must be verified through the SDE and the local AMSTI site must be notified.
