Question 1
If 13:11 is the ratio of present age of Jothi and Viji respectively and 15:9 is the ratio between
Jothi's age 4 years hence and Viji's age 4 years ago. Then what will be the ratio of Jothi's age
4 years ago and Viji's age 4 years hence ?

a) 15:9 b) 9:15 c) 11:13 d) 13:11

Answer : c) 11:13

Solution :

Let the present age of Jothi and Viji be 13X and 11X respectively.
Given, Jothi's age 4 years hence and Viji's age 4 years ago in the ratio 15:9.
That is, 13X + 4 / 11X - 4 = 15/9
9(13X + 4) = 15(11X - 4)
117X + 36 = 165X - 60
48X = 96
X = 2.
Now, required ratio is 13X-4 / 11X+4 = 13(2)-4 / 11(2)+4 = 22/26 = 11/13.
Hence the answer is 11:13

Question 2

The ratio of present age of X and Y is 11:20 respectively. Seven years ago, X was 5/11 of Y in
age. Find the difference between their present ages.

a) 15 b) 30 c) 22 d) 18

Answer : d) 18

Solution :

Let the ages of X and Y, 7 years ago be 5a/11 years and a years respectively.
Then, (5a/11 + 7)/(a+7) = 11/20
20(5a/11 + 7) = 11(a+7)
100a/11 + 140 = 11a + 77
21a = 693
a = 33
Therefore, the difference between their present ages = (a+7) - (5a/11 + 7) = 40 - 22 = 18.

Question 3

If 25 is the sum of ages of X, Y and Z and if X is 17 years younger than Z who is thrice as old
as Y. Then how old is Z?

a) 15 b) 18 c) 9 d) 12

Answer : b) 18
Solution :

Let Y's age be a.

Then Z's age is 3a.
And X's age = 3a-17.

Now, a + 3a + 3a-17 = 25.

7a - 17 = 25.
7a = 25 + 17 = 42
a = 6.
Therefore, Z's age = 3(6) = 18.

Question 4

A is 5 years elder than B who is now 4 times as old as C. C is now 7 years old. What was As
age when C was born?

a) 16 b) 26 c) 36 d) 20

Answer : b) 26

Solution :

Let age of A be X.
Then, age of B = X-5
C's age = 7

B's Age = 4 times as C

i.e., X - 5 = 4 x 7
X = 33.
Hence, A's age when C was born = 33 - 7 = 26.

Question 1
Two angles of a triangle is in the ratio 5 : 7 and the third angle is two-third of 180. What will be
the value of the smallest angle of the triangle?

a) 25 b) 35 c) 45 d) 55

Answer : a) 25

Solution :

Given that, 3rd angle is 2-3 of 180.

That is, 2/3 x 180 = 120
We know that, the sum of the angles of a triangle is 180.

Then the sum of remaining two angles is 180-120 = 60.

And they are in the ratio 5 : 7
That is, 5x + 7x = 60
12x = 60
x=5

The respective angle values of the triangle are 5(5) = 25, 7(5) = 35 and 120.
Hence the smallest one is 25.

Question 2

One of the angle of a triangle is twice the 2nd angle and 25 more than the 3rd angle. Find the
second largest value of the three angles.

a) 41 b) 57 c) 46 d) 61

Answer : b) 57

Solution :

Let X be the first angle of the triangle.

Then 2nd angle = X/2
And 3rd angle = X - 25

Being a triangle, all 3 angles add upto 180.

That is, X + X/2 + X - 25 = 180
2X + X + 2X - 50 = 360
5X - 50 = 360
5X = 410
X = 82.

Therefore 1st angle = 82.

2nd one = 41
3rd angle = 57.
Hence the required angle is 57.

Question 3

In a triangle, the smallest angle is 68 less than the middle angle which equals the difference
between the largest and the smallest angle. What will be the largest angle?

a) 90 b) 92 c) 94 d) 96.

Answer : a) 90

Solution :

Let X be the smallest angle.

Then, middle angle = 68 + X

Largest angle - Smallest angle = Middle angle

Largest angle = 68+X + X = 2X + 68

Therefore, X + 68+X + 2X+68 = 180

2(2X + 68) = 2(90)
2X + 68 = 90 (by cancelling out 2 on both sides)
2X = 22
X = 11
Hence, the largest angle is 2(11) + 68 = 90.

Question 4

In a triangle, the largest angle is twice as much the middle angle which is thrice the smallest
angle. Find the largest angle.

a) 108 b) 102 c) 114 d) 120

Answer : a) 108

Solution :

Let the smallest angle be X.

Middle angle = 3X
And the largest angle = 2(3X) = 6X

Being a triangle, all 3 angles add upto 180

X + 3X + 6X = 180
10X = 180
X = 18.
Hence, the largest angle = 6(18) = 108.

Question 1

If 1000 times of a number X is (100-X) more than X. Then what will be X?

a) 10 b) 1/10 c) 2/5 d) 3/20

Answer : b) 1/10

Solution :

Given that, the number is X.

Then, 1000X = X + (100-X)
1000X = 100
X = 100/1000 = 1/10.
Hence the required number is 1/10.

Question 2

If you multiply a number by 500, the result will exceed the number by the sum of the number
and 4990/23. Then the number is:

a)10/23 b)12/23 c)20/23 d)30/23

Answer : a)10/23

Solution :

Let X be the number.

Then 500X = X + 4990/23
499X = 4990/23
X = 4990/23 x 1/499 = 10/23

333X = 222X + 1665
111X = 1665
x = 1665/111 = 15

Problems on Profit and Loss:

Question 1

A man bought some goods for Rs.11,200 and sold them at 3/8 th of its cost price. Find
whether he had earned profit or loss(Percentage) ?

a) Loss of 62.5 % b) Gain of 62.5 % c) Loss of 12.4% d) None of these.

Answer : a) Loss of 62.5 %

Solution :

Cost price of the goods = Rs.11,200

Selling price of the goods = Rs.11,200 x 3/8 = Rs.4200
Then, loss = Rs.11200 - 4200 = Rs.7000
Loss percentage = 7000 x 100 / 11200 = 62.5%.

Question 2

A man sold an item by 23% more than its cost price and the selling price is Rs.14022 then the
cost price of the item is:

a) Rs.11400 b) Rs.14700 c) Rs.13200 d) Rs.11210

Answer : a) Rs.11400

Solution :

Selling price of the item is 23% more than the cost price i.e., 123% of cost price.
Given that the item is sold at Rs.14022.
we can write the above statement as, Rs.14022 = 123/100 x Cost price
Cost price = Rs.14022 x 100 / 123 = Rs.11400
Hence the answer is Rs.11400.

Question 4

A girl bought a book for Rs.450 and sold it at 20% profit. By using that amount she bought
another book and sold it at 5% loss. Then overall profit amount is:

a) Rs.102 b) Rs.132 c) Rs.58 d) Rs.63

Answer : d) Rs.63

Solution :

Cost Price of 1st book = Rs.450.

Profit % of 1st book = 20% profit
Selling price of 1st book = Cost Price of 1st book + Profit % of 1st book
= Rs.450 + 20% of 450 = Rs.540

Cost price of 2nd book = Rs.540

Loss % of 2nd book = 5%
Selling price of 2nd book = Cost Price of 1st book + Profit % of 1st book
= Rs.540 - 5% of 540 = Rs.513
Overall profit = Rs.513 - Rs.450 = Rs.63
