Inspection & Crash Damage Of Bicycle Repair / Work Stands
Carbon Frames/Forks The clamping jaws of a bike stand can generate a

Cutting Instructions
1. Insert the assembled (uncut) seat post with
seat post head and saddle into the frame 95

onto uncut seat post so it bottoms onto the
seat post. Lightly tighten the seat post head
clamp bolt and binder bolts.
2. Measure the uncut saddle height - (A). A B C
3. Subtract desired saddle height (B) from the
uncut saddle height measurement (A). This
is the length of seat post to cut off (C).

4. Remove the seat post /saddle from frame
and remove seat post head from seat post.
Make a pencil mark on the round end of the
length of seat post to cut off (C).
5. When cutting the seat post, observe the
following:
Only cut the round end of the seat post. Do
not cut frame end.
Use a cutting guide ( ex. Park Tool SG-8).
Use carbon saw blade (ex. Park Tool CSB-1).
6. Following the cut, use ne sandpaper to
round the seat post edges.

Seat Tube/Binder Preparation

Burrs or sharp edges of the seat tube insert opening
can scratch the seat post. Before inserting the seat
post into the frame, do the following:
1. Remove seat binder to expose seat tube insert.
2. Lightly round the opening (edges) of the insert
using 240 grit or lighter sand paper.

3. Apply carbon gel into the opening of the seat

tube. Cannondale kit KF115/.

4. Lightly grease the outside surface of the seat

tube insert.

KP095/

5. Replace the seat binder onto the frame.

Installing and Adjusting the Seat Post
Use a good torque wrench to tighten all bolts.

1. Apply carbon gel KF115/ to the lower seat post and inside the frame.
2. Slide the seat post into the frame. Set the height of the seat post in the frame within the limits.
See next gure (lower). When the post is set, tighten the binder bolts uniformly to 6Nm, 53 In Lbs.
3. Apply carbon gel KF115/ to the round end of the seat post.
Insert the seat post head completely onto the cut seat post.
Adjust up or down. Stay within the range of adjustment; in other words, the seat post must completely ll
the inspection window. See next gure (upper right).
When set, tighten the head clamp bolt to 5Nm, 44 In, Lbs.

WARNINGS
SEAT POST - The MINIMUM INSERT line permanently marked on the seat post indicates the depth to which the
seat post must be inserted in the frame. This limit is 90mm, measured up from the bottom of the seat post.
FRAME - Do not insert the seat post into the frame more than 100 mm (10 mm above the marked mininmum
insert line). Inserting the seat post into the frame beyond 100mm may result in insufcient binder clamping
force due to the post shape change, or frame damage.
SEAT POST HEAD - The MINIMUM INSERTION line marked on the seat post head indicates the depth to which
the seat post must be inserted into the seat post head. When adjusting seat post head, make sure the seat
post lls the inspection window at all times. The seat post may only be raised up to 5mm.
FOLLOW THE INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS. IF SEAT POST MOVES, SLIPS OR IS DISLODGED YOU COULD LOSE
CONTROL, CRASH, BE SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED.

Bearing Maintenance
Inspect bearing condition annually (at a minimum) and anytime the crankset assembly is disassembled or
serviced. With the crankset removed, rotate the inner bearing race of both bearings; rotation should be smooth.
No play or movement inside the shell. If the bearing is damaged, replace both bearings with new ones.

Bearing Removal/Installation (Professional Bike Mechanic Only)

Remove the old bearings with the bearing removal tool KT011/.
Reinstall bearings with a headset press and tool KT010/ . Clean inside of shell apply a high-quality bicycle
bearing grease to the inside surface. Press bearing one at a time. Press each bearing until seated against the
circlip. Following installation, apply a light coating of a high-quality bicycle bearing grease to both sides of each
bearing to help repel moisture.
TIP: Unless a circlip is damaged, removal is unnecessary during bearing removal . Use a small thin-blade screw
driver or pick to lift the hooked end up out of the groove and then pushing the circlip out counter-clockwise.

Adapter Removal/Installation (Professional Bike Mechanic Only)

To install, rst remove the bearings and circlips and clean the inside of the BB shell and adapter. Use a clean
lint-free shop towel dampened with alcohol. Apply Loctite 609 carefully to the bearing seat positions to both
shell and adapter. Install the adapter with a headset press and the installation tool KF365/. Adapter groove must
be located on the BB drive side. Press until the groove side face is ush with the drive side face of shell. Allow
at least 12 hours (at 72F) for the Loctite to cure before installing the standard bottom bracket crankset. Follow
Loctite Technical Data Sheet http://tds.loctite.com/tds5/docs/609-EN.PDF
To remove, use tool KF366/ with a headset bearing press with tool arrangement as shown. Following
removal, it will be necessary to clean all remaining Loctite residue with a before reinstalling the Si
circlips and bearings. Use Loctite 768. Use a dental pick to remove any adhesive from the grooves.
For Loctite clean-up instructions : http://tds.loctite.com/

NOTICE
BEARINGS - Frequent or routine renewal of undamaged bearings is not recommended. Repeated removal and
reinstallation can damage the inside BB shell surfaces resulting in poor bearing t. Do not face, mill or machine
the bottom bracket shell for any reason. Doing so can result in serious damage and possibly a ruined bike frame.
ADAPTERS - Use only adapters/tool recommended by Cannondale. Other available adapters /tools may cause
damage. See Replacement Parts. An adapter isnt a repair part, so the BB shell must be in good condition.
Repeated removal and reinstallation of an adapter, or improper tools can cause damage. Therefore it is not
recommended.
Loctite 609 - Prolonged contact with the frame nish may result in discoloration or damage. Be sure to immediately
wipe up any spills and remove any compound in contact with the painted surfaces.
Do not cut, face, or use abrasives to clean the inside if the BB shell.
We strongly recommend that these procedures be performed by an Authorized Cannondale Dealer. Damage caused
by improper installation/removal is not covered under your warranty.

The following procedure should only be completed by a professional bike mechanic.

1. Assemble the fork, headset, spacers, and stem without tightening the stem bolts onto the head tube. When
the system is assembled, the carbon steerer tube should be 2-3 mm below the top stem. All spacers must
be located below the stem and within the maximum stack height as shown. No spacers may be used above
the stem.
2. Set-up the compression assembly before inserting it. Adjust the length so that the expander is located
at lower stem bolt. The top cap and the expander end provides critical support to the carbon steerer when
tightening the stem bolts. Adjust the length by threading the top cap on the expander parts.
3. When the assembly is the correct length, insert it into the steerer tube. It is designed to t snugly inside
the steerer. Insert a 5 mm Allen key through the access hole in the TOP CAP and into the EXPANDER BOLT.
Tighten the expanding parts by turning clockwise to 6.8Nm, 5 ftLbs.
4. Now, to set bearing preload, insert a 6mm allen key into the hex shape in the TOP CAP itself. Turn the
entire top cap clockwise to increase preload. Turning it counter-clockwise will decrease the preload. When
the headset preload feels correct, turn the stem to align the handlebar and tighten the stem fork clamp bolts
to the torque specied for the stem. Consult the stem manufacturers instructions. The torque values for
