Lesson Plan on diversity

Subject: German Language

Topic: Food and nutrition

Lesson Title: Love goes through the stomach

Lesson Duration: 3 teaching hours (45 min)

Number and age of Pupils involved: 15 pupils, 13 years old

Countries involved: Albania, Chile, Germany, Greece, Rumania, Serbia and Sweden.

Lesson objectives

To present the main food specialties of various counties in the German language and in the
language of the pupils country of origin.
To explore and understand the linguistic similarities concerning food related words across
countries (the journey of a word across borders).
To simulate eating in an international restaurant

To be able to share the cultural/ gastronomic features of their country of origin with
their classmates and get positive feedback
To practice their knowledge on food and nutrition topic in the german language in a tasty,
entertaining way that promotes inclusiveness and increases mutual understanding.

Summary of Actions and Results

Action 1: Select a country and find out its typical food. Pupils of different origin were encouraged
to describe the food specialties of their country of origin.

Product: Powerpoint presentation with photos and information on the ingredients composing the
typical dishes of 7 countries. Presentations both in the German and in the original language of the
country presented.

Action 2: Discuss in mixed groups about the basic ingredients used in the countrys cuisine, you
presented. Share results in class. Find out differences and similarities in the use and variations of
ingredients. Agree on 12 basic ingredients commonly used by all countries. Translate them in all
languages involved.

Product: Poster with 12 ingredients in 7 languages. Differences and similarities spotting from a
linguistic point of view.

Action 3:

In small groups decide which typical food you would like to cook at home with your group with the
support and skills of your family. Invite the group to cook the typical dish together at home and
bring it to school the following day.

Product : Preparation of a typical dish of each country.

Action 4: Prepare an international menu of the day with all prepared dishes from the countries
involved. The menu is in German, the dish in its original name with the country of origin next to it.
Simulate a situation in the restaurant, where pupils are customers and one pupil takes up the role
of the waitor. Excercise your skills in placing an order, eat and pay at the end.

Product: an experiential simulation of eating an international menu of the day.


Action 5: Evaluate the project individually, in small groups and in the classroom. Point out things
you liked , problems arouse and things you would make differently.

Product: Evaluation of skills and attitudes developed, improvement proposals.

Material/ Equipment needed.

Poster paper, Projector, markers, printer, everything needed to prepare a restaurant like situation
in the classroom (plates, spoons, tablecloth etc).
