Future Treatment for AIDS

Research question:

Informative paper: How are patients with AIDS taken care of today, and how will they

be cured in the future?

Argumentative paper: Is there a solution to stop the HIV infection in the future?

Rich countries and private donors are now spending billions to fight AIDS in

developing countries, but only 2 million people in those countries receive life-

prolonging antiretroviral medications, while millions more are newly infected.

With an HIV vaccine years away, public health experts say a renewed focus on

prevention is the best way to stem the epidemic. Prevention turns on two stubborn

issues: behavior change and shifts in generations-old patterns of poverty and

gender inequality (Bristol, 2007).

The writer stresses this quotation which will become the main point of my

research paper this semester. I think we should think about AIDS more seriously

because AIDS is one of the pressing epidemics in the world, and it is also one of the

most difficult to take care of. In fact, people die every day because of it. There are even

organizations in place to take care of HIV infected people. This infection is currently

impossible to cure, but I believe that there will be a solution for the infected people in

the future.

The spread of the HIV infection has been more prevalent than before, which means

that it has still been spreading rapidly in both developing and developed countries. I

actually have been interested in HIV because it has the ability to kill T-lymphocites and

macrophages, which are really strong immune cells. T-lymphocites produce antibodies

to kill agents from the outside. Macrophages eat agents from the outside to kill and

clean up dead cells and microbes. Not many viruses can do that. This is how people die

of AIDS. ( Pg. 671) Also, I learned more medicine in Japanese university so I am now

even more interested in it. To be able to cure the diseases that were impossible to cure is

absolutely amazing. For example, pneumonia, which is defined an inflammation of the

lungs, was a major cause of death for a long time. However, it is easy to treat or cure

now because of modern medicine. This is the perfect example of the process to find
FUTURE TREATMENT FOR AIDS 3

treatments for diseases that are thought impossible to cure. I researched HIV this time to

find out about a treatment plan, and it made me more passionate about it.

For my informative paper, I chose the research question: How are patients with AIDS

taken care of today, and how will they be cured in the future? I found some related

articles on the library database to research. I am planning to begin the informative paper

with facts. For instance, I will use some sentences from the article that I found. It shows

that since 2002 the AIDS-related death toll has fallen by 10 percent, new HIV

infections are down 13 percent and more than 8 million people in low- and middle-

income countries are receiving HIV drug therapy a 20-fold jump since 2003

(Mantel, 2010). This is one of the facts that include a statistic, which means it is going

to be a really strong statement. Therefore, I am going to use these numbers to make my

paper stronger. For instance, an informative paper needs only facts so I would like to

use some statistics to show a reader that it is absolute truth.

For my argumentative paper, I chose the research question: Is there a solution to stop

the HIV infection in the future? According to one article by David Brown, it states that

there is no solution for HIV infection currently, but some articles state that there are

some upcoming solutions. I will argue to support them, and I am also planning to add

my opinion. For example, the writer in one article said, Prevention will dictate how the

disease progresses. Prevention is ultimately the key to where we'll be in 10 years, and

[deciding] what combination of prevention modalities we need going forward to get us

to a point where we can bring infections down as much as possible."(Bristol, 2007). I

mostly agree with this idea, but I would like to see the opposite perspective because I

have some ideas that I want to express on it. In addition, AIDS is still impossible to

cure, which means that there must be a few things that are still unknown about this

disease. Finally, I will organize my final thoughts including the facts and my opinion.

My topic is going to make both informative and argumentative papers interesting for

a reader because AIDS is such a common international disease. Everyone knows this

disease today. I also want people to know more details and be prepared not to be

infected. Unfortunately, there is no treatment for AIDS now, but I would like to spread

information of future treatment for AIDS through this research paper because there is

hope. Diseases that could not be cured in the past can be easily cured today. I am

impressed about the progress of medicine. This is why I am a lot eager to research this

disease. This is my purpose of writing papers this semester.
