Potential
In India, there has been significant rise in
the level of automation, as more and more
process industries like steel, cement, food
processing, petro-chemicals, refineries,
electronic industries etc. are getting
automated. In Power Systems also,
SCADA has widespread application in
generation, transmission, distribution and
substation automation. Interestingly, till
now, SCADA research and training has
been the propriety of a few leading
industrial houses in automation.
The setting up of this state-of-the-art
SCADA lab at Jamia Millia Islamia, for the
first time in an academic institution in India,
attains major significance. Now, working
engineers in the industry and students can
get full fledged training in SCADA
systems here. This prestigious laboratory
has been set up with the help of ABB, the
world leaders in Industrial Automation.
The Hardware
The system being set up is a DCS based
system, working on a 32 bit RISC based
processor with 4 MB memory (ABB AC
800F Premium processors) which can
support up to 100 masterless RTUs. The
system has a capability of handling more
than 1000 Inputs and Outputs, but now,
around 140 inputs and outputs (Analog,
Digital, Pulse etc) are energised, which
will be expanded later. The system has
two Engineering stations & four
Operator stations at present. It has an
Ethernet Data high way operating at
10 mbps. The Input /Output units are
interconnected through the highly
popular PROFIBUS. The MODBUS
module is also incorporated in the
system so that dedicated jobs can be
done. All these will provide a better
understanding of industrial buses. The
laboratory has PLCs and drives, so as
to enhance the range of systems
available for training.
The Software
The complete engineering and SCADA
The transmission development is through a single software
line graphic
running on Windows. The software has
unlimited tags, trends, graphical displays
and has a built in Sequence-of-Events
recording (SOE), which is very essential
for fault diagnosis. The software also has
the Dynamic Data Exchange module,
which enables it to import and export
data with other application software.
The SCADA Software will be linked with
EMS softwares so that the system is
more versatile.

Field Instruments
The laboratory has a variety of field instruments and transducers,
including Hall effect, smart and conventional types to measure
temperature, level, voltage, current, frequency, phase angle etc. The
laboratory also has a power analyser, stepper motors, RTDs and
thermisters. A 3-phase 800 KV Transmission line model (scaled
down), complete with circuit breakers & relays add to the better
understanding of SCADA. The Laboratory also receives on-line data
from the 11KV substation supplying the Faculty of
Engineering.
Training Programme
The SCADA Laboratory will be primarily used for
regular research and training programmes for the
Faculty and students of Jamia and for practicing
engineers, in order to give a hands on experience
on SCADA systems. There will be regular training
programmes for practicing engineers on SCADA
Systems. The courses will be customised and
modular and would suit both practising engineers
and fresh graduates. Another major emphasis is
on doing industrial consultancy and research for
the benefit of Industrial Houses. Presently, such a
laboratory facility is not available in any of the major
engineering and academic institutions in India.
