PK-3 Lesson Plan

Name: Stephanie Sommers Grade: 3

Group Size: Learning Center (4 students)

Subject/Lesson Topic: Mathematics/ Time

Objectives:
The learner will tell time from an analog clock.
The learner will tell time from a digital clock.
The learner will match an analog clock to its corresponding digital clock.

Standards/GLEs:
Standard 2.MD.C7: Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest

five minutes, using a.m. and p.m.

Contextual Factors:
Parkview Elementary - East Baton Rouge Public Elementary School
Small School
Limited family involvement
Families have limited money
Mrs. Heberts 2nd grade classroom
Students are group according to their academic level. (gifted classroom, low classroom, 2

average classrooms) This classroom is an average classroom.

Classroom desks are arranged in groups (4-5 desks facing one another)
20 Students Total
1 ELL Student He understands English fairly well, but needs to be monitored
1 student that gets pulled for special services (usually not in classroom during math)
2 students who can leave for special services if they are struggling and need additional

help (This is up to the teacher) (must go to special service instructor to take any tests)
1 student who doesnt do work unless teacher hovers over him (needs to be

reminded/checked on periodically)
3 students who need tests read aloud to them
1 Lead instructor
1 Student intern
Limited space for activities

Teacher Materials/Resources:
Plastic Easter eggs (write analog clock on one half and matching digital clock on the

other half)

Basket/container

Time Matching worksheet

Answer key for self check

Student Materials/Resources:
Pencil

Technology Integration:
No technology will be used during this learning center

Family/Community Connection or Extension:

A weekly newsletter will be sent home with the students discussing the math topic of the

week. Parents are encouraged to assist children with telling time at home. They can do

this throughout the day by asking their child to say what time is being shown on the

clocks in their homes. They can also ask if it is a.m. or p.m.

Teacher can email/call or write to parents if she needs to send or receive information.
Class dojo (parents can see students behavior in the classroom) (another way of

communication with teacher and parents)

Pre-Assessment:
The teacher will have previously taught the standard to the class.
To assess their understanding prior to the learning center activity the teacher can ask
students what they need to remember about telling time on an analog clock.
o Left side of digital clock = hour, right side = minute
o big hand=hour hand, small hand= minute hand
o a.m. = morning and p.m. = night.
o The teacher can record assessment using a check list.
Yes, they get it or no, they do not

Lesson Procedure and Activities:

Introduction.
Before students break off into learning centers, Ms. Sommers will explain that for their
learning center they will be matching the analog clock to its corresponding digital
clock.
Instructions:
o Match the analog clock half of egg to the digital clock half of egg that matches.
o Connect the egg together
o Then, do the same on the worksheet provided - Match the analog clock to the
digital clock. Use your newly matched eggs to help.
Activities.
Time Matching Game
Groups of 4 Can pair off into partners
Shuffle the pieces of the plastic eggs
Pick one, and then locate its matching piece
Connect the eggs together and place them in the basket/container
Worksheet
Fill out the worksheet provided
o Match the digital clock to the analog clock
o Make sure your eggs match your worksheet

Closure.
o Students will wrap up the activity by self-checking their work. There will be an answer
key for the students to compare their egg matches to.
o They will put the eggs back where they belong and turn their worksheets in to be
assessed by the teacher.
o The teacher will then prompt students to transition into the next learning center.

Differentiation:
Lower Students The two matching clocks can be written on the same color eggs so that
they students know the match has to be in the same color.
Advanced Students Different colored eggs for the matches. Write a story problem that
deals with time.

Formative Assessment/Evaluation:
Collect worksheet and use for this assessment
