Floating suction line in combination with an aluminium internal floating roof
Withdrawing product from storage tanks could welll result in concerns regarding the
quality of the product withdrawn. Quite often the bottom part of the product stored in
the tank will be seriously contaminated, either with water (rainwater) or sludge (tank
corrosion and other pollutants). To avoid withdrawing contaminated product from,
storage tanks floating suction lines are the ideal approach to improve the quality of
this product. Other installations of special suction arrangements for storage tanks are
known from slops tanks, where oi! skimmers are used to withdraw the top part of the
liquid column, usually being the lighter hydrocarbon parts. Floating suction lines and
skimmer arrangements can be fitted in conventional fixed roof storage tanks, external
floating roof tanks and internal floating roof tanks.

Engineering and materials:
Each floating suction will be designed and engineered
to fit the specific tank involved. Many aspects will have
to be taken into account, to make sure the floating
suction line arrangement will perform adequately.
These aspects include:
~ general arrangement of the floating suction line,
depending on the height to diameter ratio of the
tank
- specific gravity of the stored product
- withdrawal rate from the tank
- other tank hardware present inside the tank
- orientation of the floating suction line
- suitable materials for the floating suction line
(typical materials include aluminium, stainless
steel grades and carbon steel)

Accessories:
A floating suction line can be
equipped with different optional
accessories. Some examples of

- a position indicator indicating the
position of the floating suction line

The swing joint is a vital part of any floating suction line or skimmer unit based
on the pivoting action of a rigid pipe. As such the CTS standard design evolves
around a central-type balanced swing joint design. This design eliminates the
unbalanced lading of a conventional swing joint, where using a conventional
swing joint not necessarily would be problematic. In fact CTS is more than
willing to design a floating suction line or a skimmer unit on the basis of using
your preferred supplier for the important swing joints required as part of the

Internal floating roofs for
storage tanks, direct contact
Apart from the most common pontoon type of
internal floating roof CTS offers a direct contact
roof, significantly reducing emissions of volatile
organic hydrocarbons (VOC's). By almost
completely covering the surface of the stored
product and equipped with an effective seal the
emission reduction by installing a direct contact
internal floating roof is well in excess of 90%.
The CTS direct contact roofs are produced from
aluminium panels, incorporating a light weight
but strong honeycomb aluminium stiffening
structure. The individual panels are fully welded
and pressure tested prior to shipment, so you
can be absolutely sure about there integrity. On
the jobsite the panels are moved into the tank
and are easily assembled using a state-of-the-
art hook and pin design to interconnect the
elements. Apart from being very effective a
direct contact roof is low in height, maximising
storage capacity for the tank involved

The roof modules, the vital part:
Essential to the performance of the roof is the quality of the modules used. In this respect it
will be good to know that all modules are pressure tested prior to shipment. Each module is
equipped with a testing plug, where the honeycomb internal is perforated, facilitating testing of
the complete module. The basic design of the roof is exceeding the floatation requirements of
API by 350%, where the metallic skin exceeds API minimum thickness requirements by more
than 180%. This is the way to ensure the all important integrity of the roof.
Replacing corroded external roofs:
Other than being used in fixed roof tanks
an internal floating roof is an excellent
alternative to replace heavily corroded
external floating roofs. This when
combined with installing an aluminium
dome roof, eliminating rain water ingress,
draining provisions, extensive repairs,
blasting and painting. More over the
combination of a dome and internal
floating roof is resulting in very low
emissions, so the gains go well beyond
reducing just maintenance costs

Typically atmospheric storage tanks have contributed significantly to emissions of
volatile organic hydrocarbons (VOC's). When our society developed an
understanding the economic aspects and environmental impact being the result of
these emissions several products were developed to reduce emissions. At the basis
and forefront of these developments was the internal floating roof. By covering major
part of the liquid surface and through an effective seal the emission reduction by
installing an internal floating roof is in excess of 90%. Also the AP! committee has
acknowledged the importance and relevance of this development by maintaining a
standard for internal floating roofs (API 650 Appendix H). Floating roofs are available
in a wide range of materials including aluminium and stainless steel and as vapour
containing as well as direct contact roofs.

Secondary
Seal
The CTS10 is a rim mounted secondary seal based on individual rubber elements
in direct contact with the tank shell. The rubber elements have integrated springs
ensuring that the seal element is pushing with its tip against the tank shell. As the
seal design has no complex moving parts it will not encounter problems as a result
of corrosion or any other hazards affecting seal performance through time. Apart
from that the modular design facilitates easy installation. The tongue and groove
connection between the rubber elements ensures a tight fit, shielding the tank
contents from rainwater penetrating the tank. As the elements are produced from
an excellent rubber compound both vapour tightness, medium resistance as welll
as weather resistance are excellent

CTS7 Primary
Foam Seal
The CTS7 is a primary foam seal,
traditionally known as the most effective
primary tank seal with respect te reducing
emissions. Its design is based on using a
polymer fabric reinforced cover around a
resilient foam core being held down by hold
down plates. As the seal is very flexible and
contacting the tank shell in an extended
area the vapour tightness is excellent, Each
CTS7 foam seal will be specifically
engineered and manufactured to fit the tank
involved, making sure the seal will be able to
deal with both the product stored as well as
with the particular dimensional and design
aspects of this tank. Primary foam seats can
either be vapour mounted or liquid mounted,
and are available both for external floating
roof as well as for internal floating roof

A foam seal can be manufactured in many
different designs. Several aspects
influence this design, as follows:
id mounted or vapour mounted
‘A foam seal can either be liquid mounted
as well as well as vapour mounted. If
liquid mounted the seal will not trap any
vapours under the seal and emissions will
be reduced to an absolute minimum. As a
result of the direct contact between the
liquid and the seal envelope the
requirements for the envelope material are
much more demanding however. A vapour
mounted foam seal is not in direct contact
with the product stored, and therefore less
vulnerable. In case of a defect seal
envelope it will not be trapping liquid
product as well
- suspended or non-suspended seal
To reduce materials required for liquid
mounted seals these seals are often
executed as suspended seals, where a
steel construction is used to suspend the
seal
- different foam shapes
The shape of the foam and exact
geometry will vary subject to the rim gap
and other requirements for the seal
- Suitable materials
While a foam seal is very efficient,
materials used have to be able to deal
with demanding circumstances, including
the abrasive tank shell contact and, if
liquid mounted, the contact between seal
envelope and product stored. Each CTS
foam seal therefore is engineered to deal
with these circumstances and to make
sure you will get the best performance
possible from the investment made.

CTS1 Mechanical
Shoe Plate Seal
The CTS1 is a well-designed shoe plate
seal, eliminating all the problems traditional
shoe plate seals have generated in earlier
generations of seal design. Its design is
based on shoe plates being pressed firmly
to the tank shel! by compression plates
backing up these shoe plates. The pressure
point is in the centre of gravity of each shoe
plate, therefore securing the full height of
each shoe plate contacts the tank shell. As
the seal design has no moving parts it will
not encounter problems as a result of
corrosion or waxy product sticking in sliding
or pivoting seal mechanisms. Each CTS1
seal will be individually engineered and
manufactured to fit the tank involved,
making sure the sea! will be able to deal with
both the stored product as well as with the
particular dimensional properties and design

structure, reaction forces at the base supports

structures, For covering clarifiers, trickling filters, basins and many other vital parts of a
sewage treatment plant an aluminium dome structure may be the perfect choice. Being

CTS aluminium flat covers are not only economical,

covers. Unlike concrete, they can be removed easily
and they do not spall. They weigh only a fraction of
what a steel cover weighs, and they do not corrode

Obviously frame supported fabric covers are
cheaper, but they prevent any access at all and will
typically not last beyond a few years of service,

In certain applications the volume of the air to be
treated could generate a concern. The lesser the
volume to be treated, the lower the treatment costs,

In recent decades aluminium dome roofs have developed into a frequently used roof
system for covering storage tanks. They find their use in covering external floating
roofs as well as in replacing heavily corroded steel roofs. Being free-span and light

Water and vapour tightness of an aluminium dome:
Aluminium Domes are not only fully water tight, but they can also be built vapour tight where
vapour recovery or other operational needs require. Generally a dome is installed as a free
vented roof, resulting in a true atmospheric storage tank. It is, however, possible to deal with
‘Nitrogen blanketing or internal pressures up to 24” (600 mm.) of water column when fitting an

Vapour bladder
In storage terminals reducing the emission
of volatile organic carbons is of tremendous
importance, both economically as well as for
preserving our environment. Fitting a vapour
bladder in your vapour recovery system will
enable you to install smaller vapour recovery
systems, as the bladder will eliminate peak
loads. It will facilitate an uniform vapour
pressure over 24 hours a day within your
vapour recovery unit. Any vapour recovery
unit (VRU) in your tank farm will benefit from

is the configuration shown in the

datasheet. It is possible to supply
a bladder in a ring type truncated
cone however.

Foam dams are installed on both external and internal floating roofs to concentrate
any fire fighting foam in the seal area in the case of a fire, which typically should
occur at the seal area. Common design for a foam dam is a welded construction in
the rim area of the roof. The disadvantage of welding a foam dam are several, in

base of a secondary seal. Being of a modular design and extensively tested it can be

Conventional welded foam dam:
Traditional foam dams are welded
steel structures, usually welded to the
top of the pontoon area and equipped
with drain holes. Major concern is the
fact that this foam dam is trapping
rain, corrosion from the tank shell and
any product scraped from the tank
shell by the secondary seal or flowing
down as a result of the tank shell
being warmed up from exposure to
bright sun light. As a result of the
drain holes getting blocked with this
debris the water will accumulate and
expose the rim angle to aggressive
corrosion (see picture). Both foam
dam modifications and replacements
as well as rim angle replacements will
result in major refurbishing costs for
external foating roof tanks.

for all by installing a CTS integral
foam dam!
