TITLE
LOW ALLOY STEEL, 4130, FORGED BARS AND SHAPED FORGINGS; NACE MR0175, API 6A (75K, -75F, PSL 3)
1. SCOPE
1.1. This specification covers the requirements for AISI 4130 forgings or bar stock. The material shall meet
all the general requirements and test methods specified in MVG010288 (General Requirements for
Forgings or Bars for Bonnets and Bodies per API 6A, PSL 3, NACE MR0175), except as modified herein.
1.2. The specification has restrictive tempering temperature requirements which may be waived per
section 5.3.
1.3. The material is to be ordinarily ordered in the normalized, quenched (austenitized and quenched) and
tempered state. The intent is for the final part to be quenched and tempered. As such, when the
engineering BOM has instructions for rough-out and heat treat, the material will have to be quenched
and tempered again. In such situations, it is conventional and acceptable to order the raw material in
the normalized state, with appropriate quality controls to avoid material mixing.
1.4. The material shall conform to PSL 3 requirements and volumetric NDE is required. Additional PSL 3
requirements may be specified in other engineering documents referenced on the bill of materials
(BOM), as appropriate to the processing of the final part.
1.5. Informational: NOV Design Engineering is responsible for determining mechanical property
requirements for locations where the section thickness may exceed the hardenability characteristics
of the chosen alloy. If required, pre-heat treat rough- machining drawings that ensure that the critical
sections will have the required material properties shall be created and referenced appropriately. Pre-
heat treat rough machining drawings are the responsibility of NOV Design Engineering.

3. ORDERING INFORMATION
The following information pertains to the material requirements and shall be included on purchase orders
and engineering documents, as appropriate:
3.1. Grade, T3-0209-04, MVG010288. Specify tempering temperature requirements, section 5.3.3.3.
3.2. Heat treatment condition: Normalized, quenched and tempered. Normalized material may be
ordered for parts that are quenched and tempered after rough-out, if appropriate quality controls are
in place to identify the material properly.
3.3. The QTC equivalent round rules of API 6A may be exceeded when so specified by the part drawing or
BOM, when larger cross sections need to be qualified.
3.4. CE / PED requirements, if applicable.
3.5. Special certification requirements, such as EN 10204, type 3.2.
3.6. Product specification level (PSL), as determined by the purchase order, part number description, bill of
materials or routing instructions.
3.7. Specific NDE requirements, such as volumetric examination.
4. MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1. Chemical Composition:
4.1.1. The material will be according to the following chemical composition conforming to AISI 4130.
Additional requirements regarding trace elements from MVG010288 apply, including limits on
vanadium and niobium.
Table 1 Chemical composition limits for 4130 low alloy steel.
Alloying element Composition Limits (weight %)

5. MANUFACTURING REQUIREMENTS:
5.1. General:
All materials must be manufactured using the same techniques and processes as were used to
manufacture the originally approved materials. Any deviation in the manufacture of later material
shipments will be cause for a new material approval request through NOV Engineering.
