Education SDG4 Assessment Running Record Teaching one-on-one

Objective
Implement a system to measure the childrens improvement in English reading and compre-
hension and complete the initial assessment.

SDGs: Quality Education, Reduced inequalities, Partnerships for the goals

Summary
In South Africa, teachers, students and GVI
staff and volunteers associate March with
assessments, as it is the end of the first
term. After extensive research, GVI Cape
Town has decided to measure its impact in
the school by using the well recognized sys-
tem of Running Record. This system has
helped our volunteers with identifying the
exact areas of English which each child
needs to focus on.

Report

March continues to be associated with assessments at the local primary school where GVI
provides one-on-one teaching with children in Grade 3 and 4 who the teachers have identified
as in need of special attention. During our sessions with the children, our volunteers engage
with fun learning activities and provide them with the opportunity to receive one-on-one at-
tention rather sitting in class together with another 40+ students. These sessions focus spe-
cifically on English and Match and our volunteers plan fun and interactive activities to assist
the children in developing skills which are not simple essential to pass the grade, but a must
to have a successful future.

To ensure that our volunteers know which areas each child needs to focus on, if it is basic
alphabet, reading or comprehension, GVI Cape Town has decided to adopt and follow the
world recognized system of Running Records. This is a system which helps to assess the chil-
drens English skills by diving children books into different levels and follow a worksheet to
assess their ability to read and comprehend. After implementing the Running Record system,

our teaching staff and volunteers began and completed the assessment of the childrens Eng-
lish level and identified areas where our volunteers must provide special focus. This is an in-
tegral part of successful one-on-one teaching as the reasons to have one-on-ones is to be able
to customize lessons and learning techniques for the children in comparison to the standard-
ized learning environment within the classroom. Not simply are the assessments a useful tool
to identify areas where each child needs to focus, but also to continue to monitor the pro-
gress. This will further assist in identify lesson plans which has a greater impact than others
and ensure that we can monitor progress and provide early identification of issues. This feed-
back can later be shared with teachers, parents and future volunteer to ensure consistency,
continuity and a holistic approach to the childs learning approach.
