Greys Persona and Shadow in Fifty Shades of Grey Movie

INTRODUCTION

Literature has grown rapidly through years. Many literary works have
been created due to this growth. Nowadays, the function of literary works is not
only to entertain the readers but also to give them education or guidance. As the
response to those literary works, studies and critics have been developed to
analyze literary works; Psychology is one of them. According to Floyd in
Psychology and Life 7th edition, he states most contemporary psychologist would
agree on a definition of psychology as the science of behaviour organism
(1994:8). In general, Psychology often used to study human psyche. In relation
with literature, Pyschology are used as extended theoritical analysis of human
behavior and approach to psychological interpretation of literary works.

There are some theories in Psychology which can be used in literary

works. There are Pyschoanalysis, Personality Psychology, and Existensial
Psychology (Myers, 1986). Psychoanalysis, or commonly known as
Psychosexual, is developed by Sigmund Freud. He stated that human being is
sexually driven. Carl Gustav Jung did not totaly agree with Freuds concept.
Later , he decided to develop his own theory (Semiun, 2006:52). Personality
Psychology is the most popular branch of psychology. Personality Psychology
studies how personality influences how we act and behave. Existensial
Psychology seeks what is the true meaning of our existence. Sartre said that our
life has no meaning so we have to be brave to face the meaningless of life while
Victor Francl said that life is full of meaning even in a hopeless situation (Myers,
1986).

This essay will use Carl Jung psychoanalysis theory to analyze the object
material. Carl Gustav Jung is Freuds favorite student; Freud called him his
successor. Although Jung was one of Freuds student, he did not think like
Freud. Freuds concept was that libido was responsible of taking control human
personality and behavior while Jungs concept was that libido was not the only
one who responsible of it. Jungs psychoanalysis was slightly different from
Freuds. Jung said that there was collective unconscious, inherited from ancestors,
placed deeper than unconscious. Later, he developed his own analytical
psychology. His theory consist of Persona, Shadow, Anima/Animus, Archetype,
and Imago Dei (Feist, 2006).

Jungs Persona and Shadow will be used to analyze Grey personality.

Reason for choosing Jungs theory is that the writer thinks that it is the most
appropriate psychological theory to analyze Grey personality and childhood
memories. Eagleton has said, one childhood experience can affect his
personality (1996:436).
