Fort peck walleye spawn underway
Warmer temperatures and melted
ice mean the annual walleye spawning
operation on Fort Peck Reservoir is getting
into full swing.
According to Heath Headley, Montana
Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks
Fort Peck biologist, agency staff and
volunteers are again trapping fish and
taking eggs from areas in the upper Big
Dry Arm of the reservoir. The reservoir
is about 2.5 feet higher than last year,
Headley said, but we will continue to
focus the operation near Nelson Creek.
FWP staff have been working on
setting up spawning barges, holding
pens, and test nets since the first week in
April, and have begun spawning walleye.
Headley figures they are in full operation

Walleye spawn continued from front
PG-13 intense sequences of sci-fi violence and
action, and for brief strong language
79 million walleye eggs were collected in 2016,
and the Fort Peck and Miles City state fish hatcheries
maximized production resulting in 2.3-million fingerlings
and 20.5-million fry stocked back into Fort Peck Reservoir
and other water bodies throughout the state.
Folks can follow the 2017 walleye spawn on the
FWP Region 6 Facebook page, administered by Region
6 Information and Education Manager by Marc Kloker.
Updates will include egg collection totals, status of the
spawn, and photos and videos.
This is a wonderful way to keep the public updated
on our walleye egg-collecting efforts on a weekly basis,
Kloker said. Providing photos and videos of the fish,
volunteers, and the operation in general will give everyone

The weather has cooled in the Big Dry Arm of Fort
Grilled Ham & Cheese Peck Reservoir due to a cold front that moved through the
Egg Salad Croissant area. Water surface temperatures dropped from 52 to 48

It appears the lower temperatures have slowed walleye

from previous days. However, we were able to capture a
good number of ripe and green female walleye prior to the
decrease in water temperatures.
Due to the steady number of ripe female walleye
captured over the last several days, weve managed to hold
three more egg-takes since the last update. Each collection
day has averaged approximately five million eggs. That
should bring our total to 21 million eggs thus far. The
forecast is calling for a warming trend in the next few

He was born and raised in Chambersburg, PA, where
he married his high school sweetheart, Joann, in 1958. He
worked for the J.J. Newberry Co. as Assistant Manager in
Chambersburg, PA, Kennett Square, PA, and Front Royal,

International Airport in Chantilly, VA. By this time, he had
two children a son, Shawn, and a daughter, Sherri Lynn.
In the early 60s, he moved his family to Delaware
where he worked for the DuPont Company in Deepwater,
