Title of Lesson: Grade 1 Math

Marshmallow Shapes Lesson #1 March 28,2017

General Outcomes
Describe the characteristics of 3D and 2D objects and analyze the
relationships among them
Specific Outcomes
Replicate composite 2D shapes and 3D objects
Compare 2D shapes to parts of 3D objects in the environment
Process Outcomes
Communication [C]- communicate in order to learn and express their
understanding
Connections [CN]- connect mathematical ideas to other concepts in
mathematics, to everyday experiences and to other disciplines
Problem Solving [PS]- develop and apply new mathematical
knowledge through problem solving
Reasoning [R]- develop mathematical reasoning
Visualization [V]- develop visualization skills to assist in processing
information, making connections and solving problems
Cross-Curricular Connections
Science
Language Arts
Numeracy/Literacy Competencies
Identify and solve complex problems
Innovate
Know how to learn
Think critically
Apply multiple literacies
Kagan Strategies/Instructional Intelligences
Elbow partner discussion on carpet
While working building shapes and filling out worksheet, get into face
partners and have one of the partners close their eyes while the other
partner makes one of the shapes out of the straws and marshmallows,
then have partner with closed eyes use their touch to try and guess
what shape the other partner has created

Multiple Intelligences/Learning Styles

Kinesthetic building 3D objects with their hands using
marshmallows and straws
Auditory Listening to how teacher explains the sorting rule, how to
identify shapes, how to use the marshmallows and straws
Visual Seeing the different shapes
Interpersonal Discussion with elbow partners about the differences
between 2D and 3D shapes
Blooms Taxonomy Guiding Questions
What would the shape be if there were 4 sides of equal length and 4
corners etc.
Can you tell/show me how to make a cube etc.
Materials Manipulations
16 Worksheets Teacher as a guide
Marshmallows
Straws

Teacher Activities Student Activities

Anticipatory Set (Hook) Students will enjoy the catchy
3D Shapes song by the singing song and have a better idea of
Walrus what the shapes look like

Practice/Development Students may talk with elbow
Have students come to the partners about the difference
carpet. To find out what and then raise hand to share
previous knowledge they may
have about 2D and 3D shapes,
have a cube and a square
presented and ask them if they
know what the difference is
Once students have shared
what they know explain if not
mentioned that a square, circle,
triangle etc are 2D shapes and
they are flat.
Then explain 3D shapes are
Bristie Scharnatta

solid, have faces (flat part of an

object), edges (line where 2
faces/flat part meet), and
vertices (corners/points where
3 or more edges/lines meet-
also know that vertex is 1
point)
Go through an example of a
pyramid showing how many
vertices, edges and faces are on
it.
Explain how to make shapes
out of marshmallows and
straws (marshmallows used for
the corners, straws for the
edges/sides)
Demonstrate square using 4
marshmallows and 4 straws
Students will then go back to
their table with their bags of
marshmallows and straws,
create shapes and fill in the
worksheets provided
Check for Understanding
Teacher walk around and sees Students will be working on
if students are filling out shapes and worksheet
worksheets properly Students will answer/show they
Teacher ask Blooms questions understand
and has student show/answer
the question
Collect the worksheets when
class is over
Closure
Come back to the carpet and Students will raise hands to say
ask where in the community or where they have seen these
classroom have they seen these shapes
shapes before

Modifications and Extensions

If students need help with making shapes teacher can assist
If students need help figuring out how many edges/faces/vertices
teacher can coach them through
For students that need more of a challenge can have them create
triangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, octagonal pyramids
Evaluation and Assessment
Be able to complete worksheet
Be able to construct the shapes while observing
