Lesson Plan For: Capacity and Measurement

Date: March 02, Unit Topic: Capacity and Measurement

2017 Subject: Math
Grade Level: Third Grade

TEKS: 3.7E The student applies mathematical process standards to

select appropriate units, strategies, and tools to solve
problems. The student is expected to determine liquid
volume (capacity) or weight using appropriate units and
Objective:
tools.
Academic
Students will understand that different measures can be used to
Language
describe capacity.
Objective:

Guiding
Questions:
Today we will explore using a range of measures to describe and
compare different quantities for capacity.

How many cups in a pint?

How many pints in a quart?
How many quarts in a gallon?
Misconceptions: In this lesson, some students might face some misconceptions.
The students might encounter with the challenge to differentiate
capacity of volume when two distinct size of containers are shown
to them.

Materials: 1. Capacity Rap Song (word document)

2. 5 small water bottles (8oz.)
3. 5 pints (15 oz. cups)
4. 5 quarts (Gatorade Bottles)
5. 5 gallons
6. 5 bins
7. Capacity worksheet
8. YouTube video on capacity
(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4UC_StFhAk)
9. Gallon man
10. Scissors
11. Glue
12. Pencils

Procedure: 1. Teacher will introduce students to the different

measurements there is to measure capacity with a
video. Students will pay close attention to the video
to understand the distinct sizes that fit in a gallon.
2. Next the teacher will introduce: a gallon, a quart, a
pint, and a cup. The teacher will ask the students
Do you know what container hold the most liquid?
Can we align this containers from largest to
smallest?
3. The students will be divided into 5 groups. Where
they will be assign a capacity worksheet. Each
group will be given a bin( for any spills), water, 1
gallon, 1 quart. 1 pint. 1 cup.
4. The teacher will explain to the students that in the
worksheet assign to them, they will have to answer
how many cups fit into a pint? How many pints fit
into a quart? And how many quarts fit into a gallon?
Students will record their answers as they explore
with the different containers.
5. Once the students have recorded their answers, the
teacher will teach them a rap song for capacity.
Where the class they will sing it together.
6. The teacher will close the lesson with an exit
activity, students will create their own Gallon Man
constructed of gallons, pints, cups and quarts.

Assessments:
participation
worksheet assignment
oral questions

Modifications for Students will be guided with positive reinforcement. The teacher
Special Ed will also be able to read the questions as well as directions of
students: assignments. The students will be placed in heterogeneous
grouping.
