Travelling abroad

If you want to travel outside the UK while studying here,

you will need to check the visa requirements of the country
or countries you are travelling to before you travel.
To do this, visit the embassy website of the country
you are planning to travel to. We advise against
telephoning the embassies as the telephone lines are
often expensive and give recorded information only.

For a list of foreign embassies in the UK and their

websites, visit www.fco.gov.uk
A windy day in San Sebastian, Spain
IMPORTANT: Do not travel if your UK student visa will expire when
you are abroad, as you may not be able to get back into the UK. Also
remember that some countries require you to have a certain length of
stay left on your visa.

Travelling to other European countries

If you would like to travel to other countries within
Europe, you must apply for a Schengen visa.

A Schengen visa allows you to travel to up to 25

European countries using only one visa.
The 25 countries are: Austria, Belgium, Czech

Understanding your
Tier 4 Student Visa

There are many requirements for students (and their

dependants) studying under a Tier 4 student visa, including
recent changes. Here is some important information that
will explain what is expected of you, what you need to be
aware of and how recent changes could affect future
applications to the UK Border Agency.

Dependants
Your spouse and/or children will normally be granted
permission to stay in the UK for the duration of your
course. They can apply for immigration permission to
join or remain with you if:
you are government-sponsored and your course is
over six months long; OR
you are doing a postgraduate course for 12 months
or longer at a higher education institution; OR
you had Tier 4 or pre-Tier 4 student leave for your
previous course where the course was over six
months long; AND
your permission is current or expired no more
than three months before this immigration
application; AND
your new immigration application is for a
course over six months long; AND
your dependants already have Tier 4
dependant or student dependant leave; AND
you apply for immigration permission at the
same time as your dependant.

To find out if you are eligible to be with your

dependants in the UK, visit the UK Council for

Notes Keep safe!

Kingston is the safest borough in London

(Metropolitan Police, 2011), but its worth taking
some precautions.
Keep your bags closed, so that your
belongings are not on display.
Carry your valuables out of sight (such as
mobiles and wallets).
Use cash machines in daylight or well-lit
areas, or go with a friend.
Have your house keys ready before you
reach the door.
Carry your keys on you (if possible) instead of
in your bag.
Walk confidently and be conscious of whats
going on around you.
Your hearing is your best protection, so dont
walk home at night listening to music or
chatting on your phone.
Tell someone nearby where you are going,
and phone if you stay out for the night.
