Instruction Alignment

11th April 11, 2017

Summative Reflection

In instruction Alignment, we learned how to build biblical world view for students, the

twelve factors in teaching, and how to write lesson plan. In the lesson plan, we need give clear

objectives and that should match students standard, summarized oriented guiding questions,

development of the lesson in detail, formative assessment in every class. However, I think I am

still weak in how to apply biblical world view in the main idea of lesson plan. I analyzed the

reason, since I did not have much basis biblical theory and that makes me hard to connect with

education field.

For example, during the micro-teaching and writing lesson plan, I was so confusing about

how to connect Geometry to creation-fall-redemptive. (Teaching Redemptively) My answer is

that since God created math and geometry, so we need learn and love it; and in math and

geometry, it is obviously that people will get wrong answers, and they may have no patience to

learn that; however, God forgave us, so we can correct our mistake and use patience to learn this

difficult subject. And when I write in my lesson plan, the evaluator said that is so plain.

In the following semester, my plan is to accumulate more biblical knowledge though the

class. Since in International Teacher College, almost in every class, professors would like to

begin the class with a devotion. Sometimes they will share the scripture, and sometimes they will

just clarify the biblical theory with this subject. And using biblical theory as the main idea in this

subject can also apply and exercise what we learned in Old Testament class and New Testament

class. Since we learned the biblical worldview directly through these two classes. Besides, I need

to have awareness that if in the future, I teach in a non-christian school, like most of Chinses

school, Jakarta International school, how should I build such worldview to my students. I get this

answer from International Communication Class, Professor Metcalf tough that although you may

not show your christian testimony in these kind of class, but the way you do and the way you

teach identity that you are a Christian. In my understanding, teacher uses biblical in the main

idea of subject is to sow the seeds in students heart, give them more information about what is

wrong and what is right.

My strength is that I have clear overview of the development of lesson, especially in the

math. Since back my country, schools cares about students math ability rather than other

subjects, that makes me get lots of learning experience in math. Through my lesson plan, I also

have a clear outline of geometry. Students can get the explicitly of learning step, and the

exercises I planned are really helpful to them to practice what learned.

Though the micro-teaching, I realized that as a teacher you may be not good at that

subject, or may not have lots of research achievements in that field. But at least, you need have a

clear overview in this subject. It is just like process as content. (Teaching Redemptively, 16)

The good pedagogy and subjects view can create the satisfied academic results. In micro-

teaching experience, I think I need to keep learning specialized knowledge, like math, art,

science.

For unit lesson plan, although in this semester, we did not have time to do a unit lesson

plan. However, through Steppingstone to Curriculum chapter seven, I can still get clear overview

of unit lesson plan. A completely unit lesson plan involved that specific schedule, biblical world

view for whole unit, the topic, guide, and aim of what you want to teach, review, learning

activities, assessment, and resource. There are lots of parts look same with lesson plan. However,

I think unit lesson plan more focus on the big picture and period management for the subject.

There are two things I wanted to mention in this reflection. Plan students assessment

(Brummelen, 192) and review are relative in the one unit lesson plan. Students assessment can

not only evaluate how well they learned in this lesson, but also remind them to review the whole

unit. In the assessment paper, teacher can mix previous knowledge and new knowledge together.

If students forgot the priviouse knowledge, after the assessment, students can use rebate to

review and exercise the wrong questions. According to my experience in International Teachers

college, College Algebra, Dr. Spanogle will give students three times exams in one semester. It is

obviously that students need to review the whole unit, and the rebate can encourage students do

more exercise about their weakness. Therefore, it is easy to see that if teacher can manage a

completely and detailed unit lesson plan, students in class and out class will have good study

system.

In conclusion, I think the process and content are closed related. We learned pedagogy

and the way of teaching in Instruction Alignments. And the content should be the knowledge

from other lessons like Old testament, Algebra and so on. The biblical norm is another

unavoidable point, since students not only learn the knowledge, but also have to build basic

perspectives. Unit plan gives clear instructions and guidance to lesson plan that will makes

lesson plan more effective and useful students learning.
