Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) is a technology used to separate some gas species from a
mixture of gases under pressure according to the species' molecular characteristics and affinity
for an adsorbent material. It operates at near-ambient temperatures and so differs
from cryogenic distillation techniques of gas separation. Special adsorptive materials

(e.g., zeolites) are used as a molecular sieve, preferentially adsorbing the target gas species at
high pressure. The process then swings to low pressure to desorb the adsorbent material.

Maximum operating pressure = 2.8 Mpa

Minimum operating pressure =0.2 Mpa

Stage-1
There are 6 beds/columns in this 6 steps PSA system. All 6 columns pack with absorbent.
Feed gases enter through bottom line and products/ absorbed gas passes through top.
Undesired gases or gas from feed gas absorb by absorbent material (activated
carbon,silica gel,zeolite,alumina).
6 columns A, B, C, D, E, F respectively. Each column connects with each other through pipe
line and check valves provide to maintain flow rate and to control the feed gas.
Initially columns are from A to F at pressure 2.8 Mpa (High pressure), 0.2 Mpa, 0.2 Mpa
(low pressure), 0.4 Mpa, 0.8 Mpa, and 2.8 Mpa respectively.
In column A, pressure is high around 2.8 Mpa. So absorption is going on it till absorbent
bed gets saturated. In this case inlet and outlet flow rate remain constant throughout this
process to maintain pressure.
Now in column B pressure is 0.2 Mpa. By using feed gas we increase the pressure of
column B around 1.6 Mpa. When column B is pressurized up to 1.6 Mpa. Its connected
with column F .Now pressure of column B and F become equalized.
Column F is in 2.8 Mpa and its in saturated condition. Now pressure equalization between
column B and Column F. After equalization both column are at 2.2 Mpa. Further blow down
of gas will depressured column F to 0.8 Mpa.
Blow down gases from column E & F feed to column C. Purging carried out in column-C.
Depressurization of column-D from 0.4 Mpa to 0.2 Mpa by blow down of tail gases.
Depressurization of column-E from 0.8 Mpa to 0.4 Mpa by blow down of column E to
Column-C.
Same manner we also depressurized column-F 2.2 Mpa to 0.8 Mpa by blow down of tail
gases.

Stage-2
In this step, column B will become A.
That is whole process shifts one to right side.
ABCDEF
In stage-2 when column-A get saturated that time column-B ready for absorption. Now in
column-B absorption going on.
Now by blow down gas and feed gas pressure of column C increase up to 1.6 Mpa . Now
Column-C and Column-A are connected.
Pressure is equalized in column-C & A and pressure is now 2.2 Mpa in both column.
By entering feed gas we increase the pressure of column-C up to 2.8 Mpa. Now column-C
ready for absorption.
In column-D depressurized is happened and regeneration of absorbent is done.
By blowdown depressurized is done in column-E,F,A further.
