1. Focus and Review Can anyone tell me what a 5

character trait is? Can anyone
name a character trait that they
have? Why are character traits
important.

2. Statement of Today we will be reading Fall 2-3

Objective for Student Forward Spring Back to determine
character traits of the main
characters.

3. Teacher Input Can anyone tell me what 10

comprehension is? How do we help
ourselves to comprehend when we
are reading?
When you look at this cover what
do you think of? What is
happening? Does anyone know
what fall forward spring back
means? After reading this passage
I would like you to be able to tell me
what Daylight Savings time is

(If a child ask: We use fall forward

and spring back so that we can try
to have the same amount of
sunlight all year round.)

They probably wont know what

Daylight savings is, tell them you
want them to be able to explain it to
you once you have finished reading
the story - this is a two-fold prompt.
First you have set a purpose for
reading and then you can check
their comprehension from how
much they are able to explain.

Lets turn to page 16 of the book

and go over come vocabulary.
Now we are going to go around
and popcorn read, Ill start

Fall Forward Spring Back

It was the first Friday in November--
Daylight Saving Time ended that
Weekend.

Remember to set your clocks back

an
Hour on Saturday night, said
Nolas
Teacher. Spring forward, fall back.

4. Guided Practice Okay now it's your turn 25

I would have each student read one
page, there should be enough
pages for each student to read two
pages. Throughout the readings I
will be stopping the children and
asking them comprehension
questions to check that they are
understanding. At the end I will
have them talk about character
traits.

You might want to have a list of

character traits at the table for
reference
We will then answer questions
independently and talk together
about their answers. The questions
will be

What are the some character traits

of Nola? Support the your answer
using the text

Make sure that the students are

able to support the character traits
with words or actions from the text.

Why is Nola confused in the end?

6. Assessment Methods Comprehension will be checked through observations and

of all objectives/skills: questioning during the lesson.

7. Closure So Nola was always late for 5

everything and that's why she was
confused at the end when she got
her time wrong.

8. Assessment Results Comprehension will be checked through questioning and

of all objectives/skills: observations during reading.

Materials/Technology:
Books for each child
Pencils
Worksheets/exit tickets with the two questions.
