Reflection on the Act of Teaching (Chapter 6)

This chapter discuss about the benefit of lesson planning both long term and short term. It

says that it is especially beneficial for new teachers who have little experience of teaching and

less confident. It is important to consider the diversity of each student, their strength and

weakness, and their interests. That is the reason why a new teacher need to have instructional

planning. Of course, it will take time to do that. For me, teaching practicum week was short and I

was not able to observe each student. When I was working on lesson plan, it took longer time

than I expected. Yet, when I delivered it, it did not go well as planned. I had to change according

to the class situation. I was struggling with both class and time management. And, I think the

solution for this was because I did not have clear and meaningful objectives as it is mentioned in

this chapter.

As a teacher, we need to know the curriculum, our teaching plan and the grade level. This

will help us to make decision on what needs to be taught and excluded. As we discussed in class,

the features of a lesson plan should have specific objectives, reliable and useful resources,

methodology, assessment, closure and reflection. Moreover, these features need to fit the longer

term what we called unit plan so that we will be able to check whether our plan has reach its

destination or not. As it is discussed in this chapter, the long term can also be mid-term or

semester term. It is not a simple process to plan a lesson plan and a unit plan. It takes time, effort

and creativity. I am still trying to improve in fitting the claim, objectives and assessments of my

lesson plans in a larger unit plan. This become the reason of practicing many times in order to

improve our skills in planning lesson plans and unit plan.
