LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the lesson students will be able to:
1. Identify the following structures of the heart and their general function: Atria, Ventricles, Septa, Valves,
Aorta, Vena cavae, Pulmonary arteries and veins, Sinoatrial node, Atrioventricular node, Purkinje fibres
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT
disposable plastic gloves
dissecting instruments
apron
large tongs
safety glasses
dissecting tray
preserved sheep heart (or another mammalian heart)
plastic bag and tie (to store the heart if necessary)
newspapers and/or paper towels

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS


Ensure there are enough hearts
Introduction Time
Explain what we are doing today
Go through the lab sheet and what is expected of them I will be collecting the lab
sheets at the end of the period
Go through, safety procedures
everyone needs to be wearing gloves, aprons, and goggles 20 min
Be careful with the scalpels make cuts away from the body
Instruct students to make groups of 3 or 4 No more than 4. I mean it.
You should have everything you need at your benches, when you are ready, with all the
safety equipment, come get a heart from me.
Body Time
Topic: Heart 1) Allow students to explore the anatomy of the heart
Dissections 2) Circulate and answer questions as needed 60 min
3) Give students 30, 20, and 10 min warning
Conclusion Time
Make sure all students stations are cleaned up
Collect lab sheets 5 min
Remind students of the formative quiz on anatomy and flow tomorrow
