Activity Description of Activities and Setting Time
Today we are going to use a new strategy for taking notes while reading 1 min 1. Focus and Review nonfiction text. 2. Statement of Objective After this lesson, I will have some questions about the text that I want you to 1 min for Student answer with at least 80% accuracy. Nonfiction stories often answers questions we may have about the topic. 5 min Lets look at the title of our book The Aye-aye. What are some questions you may have about the topic of this book? Look at the picture to help you come up with questions. Now open to the table of contents and see if that helps you come up with questions. If student have difficulty give an example or two. The questions that you are looking for are: What is an Aye-aye? Where do 3. Teacher Input Aye-ayes live? How do Aye-ayes get their food? What do they eat? Why do they look so strange? Lets read and see if we can answer some of those questions. Read page 1 out loud. What type of questions did the first page answer? It answered a what question for me. What about you? That page answered the question: What is an Aye-aye? So I am going to write the what what on my paper and next to that I will draw an answer and write an Aye- aye is Now we are going to take turns reading about the Aye-aye. After each page, 10-15 min we will stop and see if the new information we read answers any questions 4. Guided Practice you may have. Have the students take turns reading and after each page work together as a class to write down questions. Slowly scaffold instruction so you help the student less and less with forming the questions they have. Now you are going to practice this on your own with a different book. Make 15 min sure you are take notes like we practiced because there will be questions at the 5. Independent Practice end. Have students read another short nonfiction book by themselves and then answer questions after they finish reading. Summative: The assignment will consist of a total of 10 points. The students will receive 1 6. Assessment Methods of point for each question answered correctly (x5). The student will receive 5 points for all objectives/skills: including at least 5 questions/answers in their notes (partial credit can be given here). Formative: Students will be observed throughout the lesson for on task behavior. Fantastic job using this strategy. Remember you can use this strategy for 1 min nonfiction text and if you dont like it, you can always use one of the other 7. Closure strategy you know. This is just another tool you can use while reading to prepare you for the EOGs. There were 5 students total for this lesson. Student 1- 80%, Student 2- 90%, Student 3- 8. Assessment Results of 70%, Student 4- 80%, and Student 5- 100%. Overall, 4 out of 5 students achieved the all objectives/skills: objective. Targeted Students Modifications/Accommodations Student/Small Group Modifications/Accommodations I would provide more guided support if students are not If this was with a single student I might have the student do all understanding the strategy or cannot figure out the reading out loud, but not have him/her read the whole book. questions. If students continue to have difficulty, I will I would probably have a shorter guided practice because she/he have students come up with all the questions before would be receiving more targeted instruction. they read, write them all out, and then answer them. I would do this and then scaffold to the original assignment. Materials/Technology: 2 nonfiction books (one of each for each student), an assessment with 5 questions for each student, 2 pieces of paper for each student, and pencils for each student Reflection on lesson: The lesson went well. I had to do this lesson with a small group because I was with the reading specialist, however, the group still loved it. I was not able to get to the independent practice because the students took a lot longer to read then anticipated. To accommodate this problem, I simply asked them the questions orally and they wrote them down. This was not ideal, however, they still did really well and completely understood the process.
