DYNAMICS OF STRUCTURES Homework of Chapter 2

HOME WORK 2.6- 2

With assumption of fxed support and shear bulidng , the column deflected shape would
be as indicated in below
Therefore, the stiffness of column would be :

=
From a typical interior frame, the mass would be :

HOME WORK 2.6- 3

Resolve Example 2.6-3 but with including hinge supports to simulate the supporting
footing.

From atypical interior frame , the mass would be

HOME WORK 2.6- 4

A bullet weighing 0.2 Ib is fired at a speed of 100 ft/sec into a wooden block
weighing W=50 Ib and supported by a spring of stiffness 300 Ib/in (shown
below Figure 1.6-4). Determine the displesment u(t) and velocity (t) of the
block after t sec.

Figure 2.6-4
Use Energy conservation law
(0)
(0)
So,
(0)=0.3984 ft/sec 12
(0)=4.781 in/sec

HOME WORK 2.6- 5

An elevator weighing 500 Ib is suspended from a spring having a stiffness of K=600
Ib/in . A weight of 300 Ib is suspended through a cable to the elevator as shown
schematically in figure below Figure 2.6-5. Determine the displacement of the
elevator after t second if the cable of the suspended weight suddenly breaks .

To find initial displacement Figure 2.6-5

Spatial discretization
Spatial discretization for a typical interior frame can be prepared in SAP
environment in an approach similar to that dicussed in chapter 1 . in SAP
environment.
Definition of T-section beam and column section in SAP Model
From section properties frame section as steps indicated in 2.6-6 1

2.6-6.1:insers T-section beam and

Define of mass as steps below
The general method used (mass source From Loads)

2.6-6 2:load case definwed to accommodate the applied loads for mass generation

Masses have been applied as two concenrraed loads acting on top of columns with
value of :

2.6-6 3:two point loads to simulate floor system mass in the SAP model

Modal load case
Modal load case with parameters indicate in figure 2.6-6 4 below has been adopted to
determine natural period,T, of structural

2.6-6 4:Modal case to determine natural period of the structural using SAP modal.

So the natural period of structural based on actual stiffnesses as indicated in figure 2.6-6 6
below

2.6-6 5: Modal give the natural period based upon actual stifness of
structural

DYNAMICS OF STRUCTURES Homework of Chapter 2
When necessary the SAP modal can be closer to the Shear building model through adopting
SAP property modifiers to increase flexural stiffness for the gireder and the axial stiffness of
the column as indicated in figure 2.6-6 7 and figure 2.6-6 8 below

2.6-6 7: Increase stiffness of girder

2.6-6 8: Increase axial stiffness of column

DYNAMICS OF STRUCTURES Homework of Chapter 2

So the modified period of structural based on modified stiffness as indicated in figure2.6-6 9

2.6-6 9: Modal give period of structural based on modified stiffness
