frequent hand washing)

Objectives:
Upon completion of the lesson, the learner will
1. Define good personal hygiene.
2. Explain what germs are.
3. Summarize why germs are bad for them.
4. Use proper hand-washing techniques.
5. Demonstrate how to brush their teeth correctly.

Anticipatory Set:
Have students recite the alphabet.
Reciting the alphabet is an awesome way to keep track of how long we brush our teeth and wash our
hands. Keeping our bodies clean is important to good health. Today we will learn skills that are part of
personal hygiene. For example, the lesson will explain that personal hygiene includes brushing our teeth,
washing our hands, and covering our mouths when coughing or sneezing to prevent us from spreading
germs!

Content Outline:
I. Definition of Good Personal Hygiene (CDC, 2015)
A. Good personal hygiene is healthy habits that include washing your hands, keeping the mouth clean, and
protecting yourself from germs.

B. The human body can provide places for disease-causing germs to grow, for example the skin and
openings around the body. It is less likely that germs will get inside the body if people practice good
personal hygiene practices.
C. Video Content: The video that is being shown is a video based on a little boy named David. The animated
video shows his day-to-day activities that are guided by the narrator in order to show what good and bad
personal hygiene looks like. It shows what he does on the playground, at dinner, before he goes to bed,
and his interactions with his family.
II. Explanation of Germs (Kids Health, 2015)
A. Germs are tiny organisms, or living things, that can cause disease. Germs are so small and sneaky that
they creep into our bodies without being noticed.
B. There are different types of germ that are found in all kinds of places all over the world.
1. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa
III. Why Germs Are Bad (Kids Health, 2015)
A. One a germ invades our bodies they stay for a long time. They eat up all of our nutrients and energy and
can produce bad stuff in our bodies (toxins). Those bad stuff can then cause symptoms including: fever,
runny nose, rashes, coughing, vomiting, and diarrhea.
IV. Steps to Wash Your Hands (CDC, 2015)
A. Wet your hands with clean, running water, and apply soap.
B. Rub your hands together with the soap. Be sure to wash the backs of your hands, between your fingers,
and under your nails.
C. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds, or sing the ABCs.
D. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
E. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
V. Tools You Need to Brush Your Teeth
A. Toothbrush
B. Toothpaste
C. Water
D. Floss
VI. Steps to Brush Your Teeth (American Dental Association, 2016)
A. Wet your toothbrush with water.
B. Apply a good amount of toothpaste to your toothbrush.
C. Place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums.
D. Move the brush back and forth gently in short strokes.
E. Brush the outer surfaces, the inside surfaces, and the chewing surfaces of all teeth.
F. To clean the inside surface of the front teeth, tilt the brush vertically and make several up-and-down
strokes.
G. Brush your tongue to remove bacteria and keep your breath fresh.
H. Rinse your mouth and toothbrush thoroughly.
