Merging Two Cultures Assignment

Colored Pencils
In this assignment we will be investigating and discussing universal concepts
expressed in works of art from diverse cultures. Students will choose two pieces
of artwork from two separate cultures and find a way to solve a visual arts
problem, that involves the use of composition and merging two cultural artworks
into one cohesive piece of artwork. Through peer discussion students will be
analyzing and describing how the composition of the work of art is affected by the
use of space and color. Using tone and value to build up layers of color to define
form. Students will be identifying similarities and differences in the purpose of art
created in selected cultures, and clearly state why they chose the cultures they
did.

1)We will fill out a take a Quiz on Color Theory and Composition. Followed by a
Lecture to cover the main ideas of Color Theory and Composition. Guided notes
will be passed out with and turned in at the end of the class.

2) We will do a Webercise on Color Theory and The Meaning of Colors. A


handout will be given to determine your progress on understanding techniques
ofcolor theory, and meaning.

3) We will fill out a K-M-L chart to find out what you know about Culture. After
reading and finishing the K-M-L charts you will split off into pairs to create a
concept map. Identifying similarities and differences in the purposes of art
created in selected cultures.

4) We will hold a presentation on the Concept map created in class. This will be
graded based on a Rubric system.

5) We will choose two pieces of art from two different cultures and begin to solve
a compositional problem that involves the effective use of merging art images
together. Planning pages will be given as homework to develop different
compositions.

6) We will work on a magazine test strip assignment as a skill builder.


Demonstrating on how to effectively use colored pencils to establish tone and
value to build up layers of color to define form.
7) A short essay will be assigned exploring their own cultural influences at home.

8) A Demonstration will be given on how to merge the two artworks together. The
student can move onto this step after planning pages are turned in and have
developed different compositions for their final piece of artwork.

9) A finale critique will be held at the end of the assignment. Each student will talk
about their own artwork and participate in the group discussion about the other
students artwork.
This critique will focus on the process of the drawing.
-Address points such as:
1) Viewer response to the work.
2) How do the materials make you feel?
3) Does the main idea come across?
4) How does the medium work/not work for you?
5) Does composition speak to you?
6) Does working in layers create extra challenges?
7) How was the planning different than one image?
8) Did the cultural blend work well?
9) Were there different color choices you could have worked out?
10) Can you define the culture and the art which derives from it.
11) Identify similarities and differences in the purposes of art created in
selected cultures.
