Propaganda Techniques
Activate Strong Emotions (Examples: Honor, Anger, Betrayal, love, empowerment, inspiration,
nationalism)
Response to Audience Needs and Values (How is this relevant to its specific audience? What are the
audiences values or needs that you can see?) What values are they trying to appeal to this audience or
specific group?)
Simplify Information and Ideas (What problem is it presenting and what solution is it presenting? Be a part
of the solution, not a part of the problem. Is it using truth and facts? Opinions? Half-truths? Lies? Can you
easily tell between these?)
Attack Opponents (Is there someone who is clearly a villain? Is there someone who is clearly a hero? How
is the villain being portrayed? How do you know they are the villain?)
For all of these questions, Use Evidence, Details, and/or
Examples

20. Describe what you see in the image (What symbols do you
see and what do you think they stand for? Colors, words,
language) They portrayed this for ones strong emotions to be
activated. You see a ugly monkey kidnapping a woman,
possibly raped her and he is stepping onto America.

21. Where did this come from? How do you know it came from
there? This came from the U.S because it says Enlist U.S
Army

22. Who was it made for? (what is the targeted audience?)

Those who live in the U.S that havent enlisted in the U.S
because of what the text says.

23. What is it trying to get the audience to do? (what is it trying

to accomplish?) What is the message that this poster is trying
to get across? This message is trying to get across that if they
do not enlist in the army they are going to lose and that this
can happen to their wifes.

24. What kind of propaganda techniques are being used?

Attack opponents because they are portraying Germany as a
horrible monkey, savage in a sense, that raped an AMerican
woman and this makes them men feel rage because no way
are they going to let a foreign person kidnap their wife and
step onto their land and they didnt do anything about it.

25. Do you think this piece of propaganda would be effective

in getting across the message that the author intended? (Do
you think this got people to do what it wanted it to?)
Yes it did, because U.S army ended up winning and lots of
men enlisted in the army

Challenge Questions (Extra Credit):

26. How can you make this propaganda more effective?
(better than what it is now)
I would add americans house and property being burned by
the gorillas.

27. Is the author obvious, or could it be intentionally

misleading? (Is the author trying to make it look like
someone else did this, or do you think the author is
clearly from one country or group of people?)
