SUBJECT:
Social Studies
GRADE LEVEL:
5th Grade
DATE:
February 13, 2017
STANDARDS:
5.H.2.1 Differentiate the cultures of various American Indian tribes.
2a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a
variety of digital environments and media.
3b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information
from a variety of sources and media.
ANCHOR:
I will introduce this project by asking students to recall some of the American Indian
tribes we have discussed in class, and I will start a list on the board of the tribes. I
will then tell students that we have briefly touched on each of these tribes, but they
will be given the opportunity to learn even more about one specific tribe and
present what they discover about the tribe to the class.
TASK:
I will show a finished example on Prezi of what the students final presentation
should look like. I will also provide them with an outline of information that should
for sure be covered in their presentation, and will hand out the rubric that I will be
using to grade the American Indian Project.
DIRECTIONS:
I will give the students an information sheet to fill out that will help guide their
research, and there are certain topics that must be addressed in the presentation.
Some of the information areas on the worksheet include: where the tribe lives, the
climate/physical features of the land, their type of shelter, clothing, food,
weapons/tools, any traditions/ceremonies, and an additional interesting fact(s)
about the tribe. Next I will discuss with the class what are good resources to use
versus bad resources and will wait for student responses/ideas (examples: Wikipedia
is not the best website, our textbook is useful, etc.). Then I will put the students into
groups of two and give them time to discuss which tribe they would like to choose
out of the list we made on the board. They can come tell me which tribe they would
like on first come first serve basis, and I will write group members names next to
the tribe name on the board. Once students have their tribe they may begin
researching and filling out their information sheets and discuss group member roles.
Before moving on and starting the Prezi presentation, students will need to show me
their filled-out information sheet. Near the end of the project I will demonstrate how
to create a presentation on Prezi, as well as how to cite sources that the students
use.
STUDENT CHOICES:
Students will get to pick which American Indian tribe their group will study (out of
the list of tribes we have discussed in class). They will also get to decide the group
members roles and responsibilities, as well as the resources they will choose to use
when looking for information.
STUDENT INQUIRY:
Students can use their textbook, other books from the library, or online resources
for information and facts on their American Indian tribe. Students will use their
iPads to access online resources, but will need to use computers when it comes to
creating their presentation on Prezi.
STUDENT REFLECTION:
I will ask students to reflect on the information they gathered when they show me
their information sheet and ask them if they had everything they need to put
together their Prezi presentation. After the project is finished and they have
presented their Prezi, students will need to fill out a reflection sheet that I provided
on how the presentation went, but also on how well their group member, as well as
themselves did by a rating scale to see if each member did their fair share on the
project.
PUBLIC PRESENTATION:
The students will present their finished project to the class, as well as the fourth-
grade class (I will invite the fourth graders to sit in and listen to the presentations).
The students presentation are done using Prezi, so they are also able to share and
show to parents and other family members.
