ABSTRACT
Diarrrheal is still a public health problem in developing countries such as
Indonesia, because it is high morbidity and mortality. Diarrheal may occur due to increased intestinal motility and absorption disorder compensated by watery stool. Bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum [Wight] Walp) has been used by the community as a seasoning agent. Bay leaves has many benefits in treating various diseases, one of them as an antidiarrheal potion. This study was aimed to determine the antidiarrheal activity of bay leaves infusion by observing defecation frequency, stool weight, stool consistency, as well as the percentage ratio of marker to the intestine. The examination antidiarrheal activity of bay leaves infusion conducted with 3 variation concentration which are 12,5% w/v, 25% w/v, and 50% w/v. Antidiarrheal activity testing was done using two methods: Protection of Diarrheal Method and Transit Intestinal Method. In first method, we observed defecation frequency, stool weight, and stool consistency. In second method, we calculated the ratio of intestinal transit, which is the ratio of a distance traveled by a marker in a certain time compared to total length of the mice intestine. Antidiarrheal activity test results showed that infusion of bay leaves (Syzygium polyanthum [Wight] Walp) concentration of 25% w/v and 50% w/v has an antidiarrheal activity, as it significantly (p < 0,05) decreasing the frequency of defecation, decreasing weight feses, and increasing stool consistensy. Antidiarrheal activity were achieved by decreasing the frequency of diarrheal by the bay leaves infusion concentration of 50% w/v significantly different (p < 0,05) with control positive. Bay leaves infusion concentration of 50% w/v has similiar activity comparator drug suspension Nodiar 3,69 mg/20gBB insignificantly different (p > 0,05) with a comparator drug suspension Nodiar 3,69 mg/20gBB. Bay leaves infusion showed no antidiarrheal effect as an antimotility agent.
