Course Description
Students design and construct artworks from clay to create a process portfolio (a collection
of finished artworks, self-evaluations, idea sketches, handouts, notes, and critiques).They
study ceramic art history, the elements and principles of design, critiquing, and aesthetics
(the appreciation of beauty). Activities using clay include hand building, throwing, decorative
techniques, and special clay processes.

Academic and Behavioral Expectations


Students are expected to arrive to class on time and be focused on their creative efforts.
Students are expected to respect each other, both in the process of art making and the
product they make.

Academic Level
Ceramics 1 is designed as a heterogeneous class for all academic levels.

Recommended Materials and Lab Fee


$35 lab fee for class supplies. The lab fee is due by September 30, 2016.
Checks made out to OHS or cash are acceptable. You can also pay lab fees Online on
the school website.
Smock or old t-shirt.

Grading Policy
Students will be graded in the following areas:
EFFPT - Effort/Participation = 10%
CQ - Classwork & Quizzes = 15%
EVAL - Evaluations = 25%
PROD - Production = 50%
*FCPS - County benchmark exams are required for this course.
Each exam will count no more than a regular class exam grade in the term in
which the exam is administered. Production works will also include the
following benchmark artwork assessments for 3D artwork:
Functional Benchmark (artwork) (Term 1)
Decorative Benchmark (artwork) (Term 1)
Sculptural Benchmark (artwork) (Term 2)
Written Response Benchmark (Essay) (Term 2)
Connection Benchmark (Research and artwork)
(Term 2)

Absent, SET, Extra Help & Make-up Work


Students needing to make-up an assignment due to an absence need to make arrangements
with the instructor at least a day in advances so that the student can be requested during
SET. It is the students responsibility to sign up for SET.
