Each movement of the Italian Masters Suite represents a
work from a major Italian composer from the Baroque Period
(1600-1750). The first movement, Harvest Echoes, comes
from Antonio Vivaldis Autumn from The Seasons. Arcangelo
Corellis Sarabande in E minor is the basis of the second
movement, Slow Dance. The third and final movement,
Country Round, is an arrangement of the keyboard music of
Domenico Scarlatti.

Belle Qui Tiens Ma Vie (Beauty who holds my life) was a

popular and stately pavane from the sixteenth century.
Essentially a love song, the seven stanzas of text from the
original are typical of Renaissance songs, dealing with
unrequited love. It is interesting to note that this particular
pavane is the only one that Arbeau wrote in four parts for his
study of French Renaissance dance music titled
Orchesographie.
Old Churches uses Gregorian chant to create a slightly
mysterious monastery scene filed with the prayers and
chanting of monks in an old church. Gregorian chant is ancient
church music that has been in existence for over 1500 years.
The chant unfolds through call and response patterns. One
monk intones a musical idea, then the rest of the monks
respond by singing back. This musical conversation continues
throughout the piece, with the exception of a few brief
interruptions. Perhaps they are the quiet comments church
visitors make to one another. Michael Colgrass, an American-
born musician, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, and educator,
is widely recognized as one of the most unique contemporary
voices currently writing for wind bands.
Bela Bartok was a Hungarian composer who is considered to Th
be one of the most important composers of the 20 th century. ad
Three Pieces for Band is an arrangement of three ret
movements from Bartoks cycle of short piano pieces called, Tro
For Children. These pieces, printed in four volumes, were is
written as works for young students studying piano, and each de
is based on a diferent Hungarian or Slovak tune. the
