WHEN MUSIC BRINGS RAINS!
Vast stretches of dried-up crops, stunted castor and millets, this once a naturally
endowed fertile village in Ranga Reddy District was presenting such a drastic picture
which was a contrast to its past glory.
The newspapers had reported that the dry spell would continue for another two weeks
on August 22nd 2016,
With the situation turning worse, men women and children, had started migrating
for work.
This situation was similar in almost all the Villages in Telangana. The drought situation
was grim and unparalleled. It was unusual in the Kharif season. It was the third consecutive
year that the state was facing a severe drought and in several areas the crops had withered
away. Most of the water sources including tanks and bore wells had dried up. Women
were forced to walk four to five kilometers for fetching drinking water. A large number of
people were migrating in search of work. Cattle were dying without fodder. Power supply
was poor. It would be difficult to enlist the sufferings of the people further.
To alleviate the sufferings devotees pray to Lord Balaji at Chilkur through Varunajapam
every year. The priests recite Varunajapam with the following topline

(Meaning :- let all devine beings residing in all the worlds come here reside and protect
the worship and the entire place.)
This year when the priests conducted Varunajapam there were also musician devotees
who joined them to sing Amruthavarshini, Devathamruthavarshini and Megharanjani ragam
to please the devine.
The devotion, the dedication and concern for the sufferings of the society were clearly
visible in the group of singers who were singing The environment was responding to the
devoted singing. The sun was shining brightly. When the recitation started after the pundits
walked into the lake, people who had seen would believe; the clouds started forming on
the lake and it drizzled in the night in many areas. The third day onwards the rains were
very heavy. Even the illiterate villagers of the tiny hamlet were touched by the dedication
of the archakas. A pure prayer with selfless intent will always be answered by the Lord.
The musicians at Chilkur performed wih devotion and lack of selfish motive.
This dedication and concern cannot be achieved by paying any amount of money
in return. The grace of the Lord was immediately felt as everytime the Pujaris stood in
the dried up Lake, it rained. The archakas words have come true. Ever since the japam
was started, the State has been experiencing incessant rains.
Till the time this editorial was getting ready for print, we have information that all
the Tanks are slowly filling to their full capacity and the Power situation may be better
with less blackouts and the Government may be having a peaceful smile. It is the grace
of lord Balaji at Chilkur and Divine music for the believers.

THE UNSTOPPABLE ULTIMATE
It was the thirteenth day of the epic battle of
Mahabharata; Dronacharya launched the Chakra-vyuha,
a sort of military formation against the Pandavas.
While Arjuna and Krishna were busy battling the
Samsaptakas elsewhere, the other four Pandavas
who were in the battle-field were unaware of how to
break the Chakra-vyuha enter it and attack the enemies.
At that time, Abhimanyu, the valiant son of Arjuna
nephew of Krishna said that he had learnt the technique
of breaking and entering the vyuha though he had
not learnt the way to come out in case of it being
sealed again by the troops of the enemy. He requested
the four uncles and others to follow him to ensure
that the troops of the enemies could not get rearranged
and seal the vyuha.
Jayadratha, husband of Dusshala, the younger sister
of Duryodhana and the ninety nine brothers and king
of Sindhu kingdom, managed to stop the four Pandavas
from following Abhimanyu.
Jayadratha was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva.
During Pandavas exile, he kidnapped Draupadi but
was caught and humiliated by the Pandavas. To take
revenge on them, he performed rigorous penance to
please Lord Shiva. When Shiva appeared before him,
Jayadratha sought the ability to defeat all the Pandavas.
Shiva replied that such a boon was impossible as
he had already granted a boon to Arjuna that none
other than Krishna could defeat him. Instead, he gave
Jayadratha the ability to check the advances of the
other Pandavas and their forces for one whole day;
Shiva reiterated that Arjuna was an exception to that
boon.
Jayadratha used that boon of Lord Shiva and
impeded the other four Pandavas. Eventually Abhimanyu
was caught alone inside the chakra-vyuha and was
brutally killed in a combined attack by the Kauravas.
When Arjuna and Krishna returned to the camp
after fighting the Samsaptakas, they came to know
of the death of Arjunas beloved son Abhimanyu. A
pale of darkness descended on Arjuna.
He was told that Abhimanyu was left alone inside
the Chakra-vyuha as Jayadratha blocked the entrance
and did not allow the other Pandavas to get in. Arjuna
was extremely enraged and he took a vow to kill
Jayadratha before sunset in the next days battle and
if he failed to do so, he would cast himself in fire.
He also said that he would meet the fate of the
people who committed the following sins if he failed
in his vow:
Killing ones parents
Molesting preceptors wife

Duryodhana came to know of the vow taken by
Arjuna and he requested Dronacharya to align the
armed forces in such a way to prevent Arjuna from
reaching Jayadratha before sunset so that Arjuna would
forfeit his life as per his vow.
Duryodhana assured all security to Jayadratha
who wanted to leave the battle and return home. This
was on the advice of Uncle Sakuni who saw a good
chance of Arjuna falling in the fire in the event of
his failure to complete the vow.
Arjuna asked Krishna a little later, Have I taken
a wrong vow hastily, overcome by emotions? Jayadratha
and his father Vriddhakshatra are great devotees of
Lord Shiva. Today, succumbing to anxiety because
of my sons death, I even forgot to perform the routine
daily puja which I do to Lord Shiva who had given
me Paasupatha and other missiles and made me
unconquerable in wars. Such being the scenario, how
can I, who forgot to do puja to Shiva defeat Jayadratha,
who is one of great devotee of Lord Shiva?
Krishna replied, Dont worry my friend! Whatever
puja you want to perform to Lord Shiva, do it to me
now! Arjuna obliged.
That night Arjuna had a dream in which Arjuna and
Krishna travelled to Kailasa. They had darshan of
Shiva there. To his surprise, Arjuna saw the same
garland of flowers that he had submitted to the Lotus
feet of Lord Krishna on the head of Lord Shiva.

However Sakuni consoled Duryodhana saying
that Jayadrathas father Vriddhakshatra had obtained
a boon from Lord Shiva that the head of the person
who caused Jayadrathas head to fall on the ground,
would burst into hundred pieces.
Duryodhana, eagerly awaiting the scene of
Arjunas head bursting in to pieces, sent his men
to chase the head and find out where it was falling.
But they chased it to some distance and came back
saying that they were unable to match up with the
speed of the flying head.
Finally the head fell on the hands of Jayadrathas
father Vriddhakshatra, who was doing Arghya-pradana
in Kashi. He was shocked to see the head of a dead
body falling on his hand while doing the sacred oblation.
He pushed the head down and ultimately Vriddhakshatras
head burst into hundred pieces; he himself became
the victim of the boon he got from Shiva.
In Kurukshetra Duryodhana and his men were
disappointed to see Arjunas head intact even after
hours of his chopping the head of Jayadratha making
Shivas boon to his father false.
It was after a while they got the news through
the chain of spies that the head of Jaydraratha fell
in the palms of his own father who threw it on the
banks of Ganges .And the old mans head burst
in to pieces!.
At that juncture, Drona told Duryodhana, This
is what your grandfather Bheeshma told yesterday.
When Krishna decides to play a divine sport, no
other force can stop Him from doing so. That is
why He is called ANIRUDDHA the Ultimate

own self and called Anirudhdha. He touched Arjuna
and embraced him as if counseling him in grief. But
He actually transferred His power of unstoppability
to Arjuna
Even today, the Lord gives darshan as
Parthasarathy in Thiruvallikeni, along with his son
Pradyumna and grandson Aniruddha to show us that
Aniruddha is also another form of the Lord as Veda
says that a father, his son and grandson are one
but in three forms.
In Nachiarkoil, Lord Srinivasa shows this more
explicitly by standing with Pradyumna, Aniruddha,
Purushottama and Sankarshana, thereby showing
us that all four of them are verily different forms of
His own self.
The Lord is called Anirudhdha because He does
unlimited but heartening acts that save the noble
ones in the world unstopped in any way by the
strength of the evil forces.

Madhura Vijayam - 60 Sri Ranganatha Travel Part II

Story so far: The story based on the 14th century
incidents, was written by Sri Venugopalan which is
based on the historic facts elucidated in Madhura
Vijayam composed by Maharani Ganga Devi, Chief Queen
of King Kampanaraya. Two youngmen Vallabha and Dutta
set out on an expedition to locate the idol of Lord
Ranganatha of Srirangam, which was saved by four
Kodavas from being ransacked by Muslim invaders.
After several adventures the two boys, with the help of
Chenchu tribes found the idol along with one Kodava
who protected the idol for more than
eighteen years deep inside the forest of Chandragiri. Lord
Ranganatha was brought to Tirumala and King Ranganatha
Yadavaraya the ruler of that place patronized the
upkeep of the idol with daily pujas. Coincidentally Sri
Gopanna, commander-in-chief of the Vijayanagaras mulvoy
province reaches Tirumala in search of Lord Ranganatha
and he promises Vallabha help of Vijayanagara to
restore Lord Ranganatha to Sri Rangam which enabled
Vallabha break his fast unto death. Vallabha and Datta
turned to Kancheepuram on their way back, ensured safety
of Manjari with her neighbors after the death of
Singazhagar who was the key energy behind the
expedition and left the town with disguised Vaishnavas
as the fort doors were closed as a defense to an
impending attack by Vijayanagar army. The disguised
Vaishnava leader was no other than Camphor merchant
who revealed that he was the head of Intelligence army
of Vijayanagar. Dutta, Vallabha and the Vijayanagar
men managed to kill all their pursuers and escaped
to the foothills of the mountain on which Sambuvarayas
fort exists where at the behest of Camphor merchant
Vallabha and Datta enter the Rajagambhira fort as
Gem merchants to rescue
Makaravizhiyaal. They spot her in the palace and ensure
here safety. Meanwhile, as a first step the Vijayanagar army
mission was undertaken to conquer Sambuvaraya
of Rajagambhira. Kancheepuram was conquered and
Kampana Rayas army advanced to Rajagambhira
mountain conquered it and killed the Raja Gambhira
king. The Madurai princes was rescued. Later, Vallabha
and Datta are entrusted with the task of escorting
Princess Madhurangini to Pandya kingdom. During this
long journey, Vallabha expects a heart-to-heart chat
with the princess to express his love. Meanwhile when the
convoy comes to Mulvoy kingdom Vallabha gets information
that many of the small kings who were under Sambuvarayas
have pledged allegiance to Vijayanagara emperor which
includes his mother land Sathyamangalam. This has
significant influence in shortening their journey. Enroute
Vallabh visits his mother along with Datta. While Vallabha
and Datta along with the princess were on their way to
final destination, they were attacked by two intoxicated
elephants. Vallabha rescued the princess and both ended
up rolling down into the deep forest where they met an
unmarried couple from Muduvai tribe. The princess had
a nice conversation with Vallabha about the Muduvai tribe
practices. Dutta who came back finding Vallabha warned
him not to fall in love trap but Vallabha could not stop

thinking about Madura. Meanwhile they restored their journey
back to Pudur. Madura was excited as she was nearing
her destination.
Madhura rode her horse swiftly while moving on the
roads of Pudur. Many people around there watched
her and shouted Ah! The princess is back!. Soon
she reached the palace. She jumped quickly from
the horse, ran inside shouting Appa (father) and
embraced her father who was lying bedridden. Soon
a crowd gathered on the hall and the entire place
became restless for sometime. After sometime when
the initial hustle got settled, Madura took both the
boys near to her father and introduced them and also
said proudly that they only had freed her. The King
who was very happy after hearing this said, Oh boys!
She is the only daughter I have. I have no sons. My
ancestors were great people and had a very big
kingdom. But now we are kings only for name sake.
I am just a leader to this small place valanaadu. But
my citizens still call me a king of Pandya Kingdom.
It is their affection towards me that is all! But when
will we regain our lost glory said the King with sadness.
Later he asked about their welfare but was unable
to speak more as he was affected by cough and
wheezing problem. The entire day passed by discussing
and exchanging their stories between them. As the
night came the two boys went to the place allotted
for them and while lying down they felt bad for the
status of a very large kingdom. The Pandyas were
ruling even before Mahabharat times. It was said that
the famous Pandava Arjuna married the Pandya princess
Chitrangada, the daughter of Malayadhwajapandya and
begot the greatest ruler for Pandyas Babhruvahana.
They were ruling for centuries without any hurdle. Only
during recent years because of the family issues they
got seperated into five different small kingdoms under
five heads. Because of this, the kingdom lost its strength
and became so weak which made foriegners enter
the kingdom easily. Even now the generations of those
five kingdoms are separate small valanadus across
southregion of podigai mountains. Thus the boys spent
their night thinking all these. Originally if everything
had gone well, this Kulasekara Pandiyan would have
been ruling the entire kingdom. Now he has very few
army and they are also with him just out of the past
glory and respect and not because they would be
remunerated well.
Even though the King took good care of Vallbha and
Dutta by providing them tasty food and all facilities
both were very disturbed to see the sorry state of
the palace, the old look of the walls, furnishings,

and the people who were wearing ordinary clothes.
But they were surprised to see the respect and honour
the people show to the King. After staying there for
two days under the hospitality of the King and princess
Madura, the third day when they were about to leave,
the King hugged them and said, Oh Boys! I am
happy that a new kingdom has been formed on the
banks of Thungabadra river against the Turks. Only
big kingdoms can defeat the Turks. I am really happy
that Vijayanagara kingdom has been formed. Please
pass on my blessings to Bukkaraya and Kampana
Raya. Also ask them to invade Turks and get back
Madurai soon. We will always support him. We are
happy that the sambuvarays are defeated. Did you
see how they kidnapped my daughter and wanted
to capture our kingdom? Betrayers they are! having
spoken thus the King presented them lot of pearls
and bid farewell for them. While leaving the palace
Vallabhas heart became heavy. He was in heavenly
state for all these two days as Madura was taking
care of him fully. She did not even waste a minute
and was looking after his needs carefully. Her glance
and her smile which she used to throw occasionally
on him gave him lot of pleasure. They have exchanged
countless glances these two days. Infact they were
very quite sure when they can have eye to eye
exchange between them. Whenever their eyes met,
they shared their minds and were exchanging greetings
and well being of each other. The eyes of both of
them became so friendly and were exchanging so
many untold feelings . Vallabhan who had a wonderful
time which he had never experienced before felt very
sad when it was time for him to leave. He was deeply
affected and was struggling with his emotions with
heavy heart .He was not even recognizing his own
actions as what he is talking and what he is doing.
Madura bid him farewell with a pleasant smile.
Princess! let me take leave. Said Vallabha .His eyes
was wet with tears. The princess was speechless.
She just nodded her head. He heard the horsesknigh.
He became conscious that tears should not roll down
from his eyes so he quickly went near the horse and
jumped on it. He gave a glance at the king and the
daughter and kicked off his horse and started leaving
as he does not want anybody to see his tears.
Vallabha and Dutta would not have gone very far from
the city, they stopped and turned back as they heard
the horse sound. They were surprised to see Princess
Madura coming towards them waving her hands.
Vallabha! Please go and find what it is. Seems like
she wanted to tell something thus said Dutta.
Vallabha went near to her. The moment he saw her
his mind bounced like a unmanageable sea on a
full moon day. He became very eager and called
<uHOQ kQ*~@O _|k =Y"# `.
her Princess! and could not talk more. Both their
eyes met each other like magnet and were in that
state for sometime. After slowly recovering from it,
she called him Sir!
They both alighted from the horse and went to the
nearby shady place.
Sir! Please forgive me for disturbing your journey.
We were feeling guilty that we have not rewarded you
properly when you both were leaving.
Why do you think so Princess! You gave us beautiful
pearls. What else we need?
No no! that was not at all sufficient for our stature.
My father felt heart broken because of this.
I can understand his situation said Vallabha.
The Princess spoke I got an idea only after you
left the palace. Out of several ornaments which we
got from our ancestors, this gem studded sword is
most precious one. Whenever a new king sworn in,
they used to keep this with them. I suggested my
father that such an reputed sword would be a more
suitable one for you . My father immediately agreed
and that is why I came rushing here.
Saying this she also untied the sword which she
had kept safely on her hip.
Vallabhan took the sword from her with great excitement
and respect. He slowly removed the cover. He found
that the sword is fully studded with rubies and emeralds.
Oh Princess! I am so much attracted with this sword.
I dont have any words to express my gratitude .
said Vallabha.
He looked at her with deep emotions. Even she was
looking at him with the same feeling. That silence
spoke so many words which they wanted to share
with each other which they were unable to do openly.
Vallabha broke the silence and said, I am very much
grateful for this. Please convey my regards to your
father.
Having said this he sat on his horse and said good
bye to her. Before leaving he once again exchanged
glances with her eyes and left the place slowly. Soon
he reached the place where Dutta was waiting for
him. He was lying under the tree waiting for him.
Vallbha felt bad and asked Dutta, Did I make you
wait for long time?
Dutta after getting up slowly and going towards his
horse replied , I was even ready to wait for some
more time. Now that I am used to such things giving
a meaningful smile at Vallabha .
Vallabha liked what he said. At the dusk they reached
an inn .The inn was located with beautiful surroundings.
On the western side of the inn one could see the

bluish melai mountain ranges neatly stacked one
near the other. The gentle south western breeze which
hit the mountain passed through them elegantly. Both
of them had their bath and sumptuous food ,came
out and sat outside. Suddenly they heard the screach
of a bird. The sadness in its tone hit the entire area
like trees, branches all over and was heard for long.
Vallbha suddenly started crying as he was deeply
stuck in grief after hearing the sound.
Why am I feeling sad? He thought.
Dont you know this. You are in love said his mind.
That is why you are not eating properly and also
not talking to Dutta properly.
He felt whatever his mind told must be true. When
the moon shone like silver in between the branches
of the tree he turned towards east and looked at the
path he travelled all along and imagined that this same
path would be touching Maduras feet right now in
Pudur.
Ha! How lucky this path could be. It has the luck
of getting touched by velvet feet of Madura. The moment
he thought that he bent down and kissed the path.
Later he looked around to see somebody watched
him. He recollected one of the Azhwars pasuram
who sung out of extreme devotion , would remain
your steps for ever . Whether it is devotion or love
both make the man behave extremely. Vallabha stood
there for long time with his mind completely lost
in fond memories of Madura.
Dutta who came there saw Vallabha who was
completely occupied in his own world forgetting the
entire surroundings shook him and said, Vallabha
please come it is almost midnight now.
Vallabha recovered slowly and was shocked .

WHERE DID THE RAIN WATER GO?
The skies have opened up literally drenching the Telangana State during the last few days. As the rivulets and
streams swelled in Ranga Reddy and the catchment areas that feed Osmansagar and Himayatsagar lakes,
there was huge anticipation this will be the year of revival for the two reservoirs that went totally dry since
November, 2015.

posting pictures of gushing streams in Ranga Reddy. Alerts were sent and expectations rose that the two
reservoirs would get good inflows by Friday. But the statistics had a different tale to tell.
Excess rainfall : Osmansagar with a storage capacity of 3.9 tmcft, got inflows of 0.5 tmc and its twin, Himayathsagar
with a storage capacity of 2.9 tmc, has a mere 0.1 tmcft. This after the catchment area for these two reservoirs
received a copious 604 mm rain against the normal of 565 mm during the monsoon season from June 1 to
September 16.
Parigi, Vikarabad, Anantagiri received good rains, yet expected inflows were not there. This should ring alarm
bells, official sources cautioned, if the Government is sincere.
Both the reservoirs used to supply 40 million gallons per day (mgd). Same is fate of the two other drinking
water sources - Singur and Manjira which used to supply 120 mgd.
The HMWSSB is forced to depend on the expensive Godavari and Krishna drinking water schemes (90 mgd
Krishna Phase III and 85 mgd Godavari) in lieu of shortfall of 40 mgd from the two reservoirs and 120 mgd
from Singur and Manjira. The board overall supplies 355 mgd.
More than the disappointment over poor inflows into the two lakes despite the State receiving cumulative 693
mm against the normal of 677.5 mm during the South West Monsoon season, the pertinent question is -
Where did the rainwater end up without reaching the reservoirs?
Encroachments : Focus is back on the failure of the State to enforce GO 111 which prohibited rampant constructions
up to 10 km from full tank level of the lakes in 84 villages. M.V.Soundarrajan, chief hereditary trustee of Chilkur
Balaji temple, who offered special prayers along with devotees for rains, charges indiscriminate quarrying
and mining of hillocks that served as natural water shed area for the lakes halted inflows into the lakes.
Water Board sources said that after GO 111 was issued in 1996 at the intervention of Supreme Court, a
detailed joint inspection was done with the Revenue and irrigation department staff and encroachments in
the FTL boundary and buffer zone were identified and recorded.
It was for the Revenue Dept. and Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority to act against encroachers.
The feeder channels that bring rain water to the two reservoirs were also under the control of revenue department.
We keep writing to the Ranga Reddy district officials about the encroachments in vain, they revealed.
Check dams, water conservation structures and several farm houses upstream of the two reservoirs were
another reason for the reduced inflows though they may have improved the water table in the vicinity.
