Content Area: Grade Level:

Math 8
Subject Matter:
Geometry- Volume of a Cone
Lesson Content Description:
-Learning the formula for the volume of a cone and
plugging in values to find the volume of given cones.

Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery:

-Review volume of a cylinder
-Make predictions
-Make connections with volume formulas
-
Common Core Standard:
Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving volume of cylinders,
cones, and spheres.
CCSS.Math.Content.8.G.C.9
Know the formulas for the volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres and use
them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
ELD Standard:
Interpretive Bridging

6. Reading/viewing closely
a. Explain ideas, phenomena, processes, and text relationships (e.g.,
compare/contrast, cause/effect, problem/solution) based on close reading of a
variety of grade-level texts and viewing of multimedia, with light support
Common Core Lesson Objective:
ASWBAT find the volume of cones using the formula.

Assessment:
Formative: review with cylinders, class discussion, guided practice problems,
circulating the room, worksheet

Summative: n/a

Lesson/Assessment Modifications: ELL: Special Needs

-adjusted homework assignment, partner work, formula sheet
Technology: Describe the types of technology you will be utilizing in your
lesson to create and enhance instruction
If no technology is used, please explain why.

LESSON PRESENTATION

INTO

Step-by-Step Anticipatory Set/Orientation

Do a quick recap on the Volume of a Cylinder from previous lesson
Have class state the formula
Ask about both variations of the formulas and discuss
Real life examples of cones

THROUGH

Step-by-Step Modeling/Presentation of the Objective

Present lesson title and objective and have students copy it down
Show the students the cylinder figure and the cone figure. Tell them
that both figures have the sane diameter and height.
Ask the students how many times we would need to fill up the cone to
fill the cylinder
Use polleverywhere to collect student responses
Use water and food coloring to demonstrate (possibly rubber bands)
Talk to students about how it took 3 cone-fulls to fill the cylinder. This
means that the Volume of the cone is 1/3 of the cylinders volume
Present volume for cone formula have students repeat
