A Vanishing Trade
Last semester I've required my
SocSci2 students to conduct case
studies about vanishing trades (i.e.,
types of livelihood or business that
may soon become obsolete). Some
of the interesting case studies that
my students submitted were about
umbrella repair service, typewriter
repair service, house-to-house blade
sharpening service, shoe repair service,
faith healing, sorbetes peddling, novena
for hire service, and newspaper street
peddling.
The last one caught my attention.
Apparently, there is a decline in the
demand for newspapers over the past
few years. According to a respondent
there are days that she does not
make any sale. She does not have a
permanent place to sell newspapers. As
a livelihood, newspaper peddling in the
streets is now barely sustainable.
What could account for this decline
in newspaper readership, which include
tabloid readership? Are people less
functionally literate and too busy to read
newspapers? Could this be the result of
technological innovations that compete
with the print media? Could the decline
have been particularly brought about by
online news sources and social media?
Perhaps the answer is somewhere
in between. I think people are now
less functionally literate because of
technological innovations.

depth investigative journalism. Many
netizens are more inclined to believe
fake news. It might not necessarily
because of gullibility or stupidity of
readers but it has probably more to do
with the way the news is spread and
the speed the news is spread. Fake
news has the tendency to become
viral online because of its sensational
and emotional appeal. Sharing or
reposting fake news is also very easy
using Facebook and Twitter. The viral
spread of fake news online could be

compared to some fake news. Even
news intended to be satirical is more
appealing than real news. According to
one survey conducted by Ipsos Public
Affairs and BuzzFeed News, fake
news headlines about the 2016 U.S.
elections fooled Americans 75% of

On the other hand, Filipinos were
proven to be gullible when many
believed one fake news headline in
2011 claiming that a Harvard study
proved that Filipinos are the most
gullible people in the world. The
humorous irony about this could never
be overemphasized. A respected
columnist writing for a national
broadsheet even reacted to it in her
column. The purported study, which
said to include "content analyses of
over 500,000 historical documents
from 300 different societies" by the
"Harvard Institute of Socio-Political
Progression (HIS-PP)", was entirely
fictitious. It was published in satirical
blog MosquitoPress.net.
Newspaper peddling might be
one of the vanishing trades primarily
because of modern online digital
technology. This technology offers
access to almost the entire gamut of
human knowledge but it also became
the vehicle of hoaxes and satires
believed as truth. As a consequence,
it seems that print media is now also a
vanishing trade. Credible journalistic
news will survive in digital form but
it is gradually being outcompeted by

teaching strategies designed
to maximize the full develop-

The Theory on Multiple
Intelligences promotes the
development of all avenues
of intelligence in young chil-
dren. This approach provides
a framework to identify how
children learn; to build on their
strongest assets; to help de-
velop them more intelligent by
exposing them to a variety of
ways of learning; to better in-
dividualize for their interests
and needs; and to use teach-
ing strategies that make learn-
ing more efficient, successful

Scientists have been
known to develop their
knowledge and understand-
ing about the natural world
and the same should apply
to teachers in making their
students learn science. The
teacher therefore develops
a strong relationship with his

The following principles are
suggested by the American
Association for the Achieve-

positive, supportive relation-
ships with children. Through
environments that offer a va-
riety of stimulating, hands-on
materials that children indi-
vidually select, and by creating
learning centers that provide
natural opportunities to move,
be active, and fully engaged
in either solo or small group
experiences, we better serve
and meet the needs of more
children.
It is, therefore, of utmost
importance that all of the var-

rially altered by human activ-
ity where extractive resource
uses are not allowed and main-
tained to protect outstanding
natural and scenic areas of
national or international sig-
nificance for scientific, educa-
tional and recreation use.

University-based Institute for
Environment Conservation
and Research(INECAR) and
the Metropolitan Naga Water
District(MNWD) have drafted
position papers on the project
which had its groundbreaking
in December 2015 based on
news stories carried by nation-
al dailies that year.
According to these press
releases, the mini-hydro power
plant which will tap the water
of Rangas River is a project
of a consortium of six energy
firms and is eyed to produce
10 gigawatt-hours of energy
annually to supply the power
needs of the Camarines Sur
IV Electric Cooperative in the
Fourth District of Camarines
Sur or the so-called Partido
area.
These include Mega Re-
newable Power Development,
Viscal Development Corpo-
ration, Brightvale Ventures,
Greentech Asia, Ormin Power,
and Repower Energy Devel-
