FULL Lesson Plan for the Elementary Music Class

Objectives: Students will perform melodic improvisation in 6/8 time for eight measures on
bared instruments within the given rhythmic structure and in the do-based pentatonic with
fewer than three errors in pitch choice.

Standards Being Addressed:


MU:Cr1.1.5b Generate musical ideas (such as rhythms, melodies, and accompaniment patterns)
within specific related tonalities, meters, and simple chord changes.
MU:Pr6.1.5a Perform music, alone or with others, with expression, technical accuracy, and
appropriate interpretation

Lesson Sequence (lessons may have more or less activities as appropriate):

Entry Activity/Transition: Hello Students! Today we are going to learn a fun nursery rhyme!

Activity #1: Learn the Song


1. T plays D on bass metallophone. T Sings song to students.
2. Teacher asks what the baker is doing? (baking a cake)
3.Teacher Sings song again
4T asks Students what does the baker do to the cake? (pat it prick it mark it with a T put it
in the oven)
5. Teacher sings song again.
6. T sings first phrase and has students echo.
7. T sings second phrase and has students echo.
8. T sings third phrase and has students echo.
9. T sings fourth phrase and has students echo.
10. T sings song once and has students sing with her a second time.
11. S audiate the piece to internalize
12. T asks if anything needs reviewed.
13. Review as necessary (probably have to review the 3rd phrase)
14. Perform the song.

Assessment: Students were able to perform the song with fewer than three errors in
rhythm and pitch.

Transition: Lets sing this one more time and I want you to clap on the big beats if you
need help I will be playing on the big beats.

Activity #2: Ostinato Accompaniment


1. Work with ostinato 1 (pat pat pop it)
2. Have students pat this rhythm on their legs.
3. Rehearse multiple times.
4. While students work that begin the second ostinato (microwave use microwave use)
5. Have students say the ostinato, then put it to claps
6. Move onto the third (bake a cake and bake it fast)
7. Have the students say the ostinato and then snap the rhythm.
8. Have students choose their favorite and perform it with everyone
9. If you have a bass instrument you are going to be the pat pat pop it.

11. Teacher demonstrates then students practice
12. If you have an alto instrument you are going to be the microwave part
13. Your notes are F# and A.
14. Teacher demonstrates and Students practice
15. If you have a Glockenspiel you get to be our bake a cakes
16. Your note is D
17. Teacher demonstrates and students perform.
18. Have students either sing the song or perform their instrument part.
19. Have students do singing and instrument part.

Assessment: Can students perform the ostinatos in with the correct rhythm with fewer
than three errors?

Transition: Were going to do that two more times but the second time I dont want
you to sing. Student play through song and T improvises the second time through.

Activity #3: Melodic Improvisation


1. What did I do differently? I changed the melody right! I played different notes.
2. So we are going to sing through again but the second time I want everyone to
experiment with playing different notes on your instruments.
3. This time only one group of instruments is going to play at a time. Basses you are first.
4. Repeat as necessary to get through all instrument groups.
5. Ask for volunteers to improvise by themselves.
6. Give feedback as necessary to students.

Assessment: Were students able to perform correct pitches and fill an eight bar phrase
with melodic content with fewer than three notes outside the tonal set.

Closure: I hope everyone enjoyed getting to work with the baker man today and we will come
back to him another day for some more fun with instruments.
