Time Outlines:
12:47 Housekeeping & Demo set-up:
- - As they come in, I will put the first page note of todays lessons powerpoint
12:57 on the board and they will need to copy it. Also, I will remind them as they
come in that they need to have their lab booklet and science fair booklet.

These will also be on the board along with the presentation date for science
fair (3/28) and due date for lab report (3/23).
- While students are taking out their notebooks and copying from the board, I
will take the attendance, and I am going to set up the demo for the lesson
(since osmosis does not occur instantly). For the first demo, I am going to
put the gummy bear into three different beakers: one containing nothing
(control), one containing water and one containing salt water.
- I will also set up the dialysis tube demo. I am going to put the starch solution
in to the dialysis tube and put the tube into the beaker containing iodine
solution. As I set up, I am going to ask students to open their lab booklets to
page 57 and write the initial color of the dialysis tube and beaker containing
iodine.
12:57 Science fair preparation:
-1:22 - Students have been working on the science fair for the last few weeks. Next
week they will have to hand in and present their science fair project.
- As a class, we will use 25 minutes to go over what makes a good poster
board for science fair.
- I will explain how the presentation will run, what they are expected to hand
in on the day of presentation (report and poster board) and what they need to
have on their poster board.
- We will also take examples from last years posters, try to analyze the good
and bad things about the poster and see what could have been improved and
what was done well.
- Students should write down these notes in their science fair booklet so that
they do not forget any of the information.
1:22- PowerPoint Lesson:
1:52 - I am going to start the lesson by asking them the question, Has the scent of
food ever filled up your room when someone in your home was cooking? I
will tell them that its because the scent (gas molecules) has diffused
throughout the home, going from an area of high concentration (the kitchen)
to an area of low concentration (your room).
- Go over the definition of diffusion on the powerpoint and show the students
the simulation online. Students should be taking notes of the lesson.
- Go over the example in the picture and draw the diffusion model on the
board. Students are required to copy the drawing after the explanation is
complete.
- Show students the demo with food coloring in a beaker. Before putting the
dye, I am going to ask them what they think will happen. After adding the
food coloring, students will observe that the food coloring has spread
throughout the beaker. I will ask them whether we can say what we saw was
an example of diffusion.
- Moving onto the osmosis part of the lesson, students will copy the notes and
I will explain the definition. For osmosis, I am going to use the example of
Hayoung Ahn

having pruned fingers after taking a bath. I will tell them that the finger
has swollen because the water has moved from a high concentration area
(bath) to a low concentration area (your finger). Thats what osmosis is
about. It is the movement of water through a semi-permeable membrane. I
will give the definition of semi-permeable membrane.
- I will go over the pictures on powerpoint and draw the osmosis model on the
board. Again, after completing the explanation, students should copy the
finalized model.

1:52- Dialysis lab tube demo & gummy bear demo:

2:02 - At the end of the lesson, we should see that the gummy bear placed in water
has swollen whereas the one placed in salt water has shrunk.
- For the second demo, the dialysis tube, iodine from the beaker has entered
the dialysis tube which caused the color to go purple, whereas the starch
inside the tube has not been able to come out so the beaker will remain its
original color.
- And as an end-routine, I will incorporate what we learned from the demo by
asking students questions, such as As we saw, iodine can go into the tube
while the starch cannot. What is the term used to describe the role of the
tube? And what is this phenomenon called?

Notes:
- Some students might be able to copy the notes neatly whereas some will not.
In order to adapt to everyones needs, students will be allowed to move to
the front to copy the notes or they will be allowed to receive the photocopied
copies of the powerpoint.
- Also I am going to walk around during the whole lesson so that students
with either special needs or need extra help will have my support.
- This class is very material heavy due to the snow day. I will try to finish as
much as I can; however, I am going to put more emphasis on science fair
and explaining the concepts, rather than rushing through the lesson.
Whatever that does not get done will be continued on next class.

Homework:
- No homework
