BRILLIANT TECHNOLOGY EVERYWHERE

BUT A DARK AGE of NEUROSCIENCE THEORIZING
We cannot possibly make our Neuro-Endocrinology Page a complete
rendering of all the spectacular and provocative new research which arises
on a daily basis, but by the same token our choices for posting here will
most definitely NOT be random or haphazard
We believe that the neuroscientists and endocrinologists of our time are
mired and entrapped in an outdated underlying and tacit set of practically
medieval assumptions. This makes it nearly impossible for the language
they use to speak about the brain and its events to ever benefit from all the
wondrous technologies and findings in their research.
Despite all that "knowledge" that we, as a society and as professionals have
accumulated in seeking to improve our wisdom, we are as lost as ever in the
complexities behind the workings of our mind.
Hopefully our readers here will feel that you are getting more than the usual
blurb from the so called "medical journalists" whom we have taken to calling
'medical paparazzi" (have we coined a new term? smile emoticon ) because
of their hit and run, drive-by blurbs and truly often unthinking copying of
press releases ---to which they then affix either misleading or sensationalist
headlines.
It is even more disconcerting to find that these medical paparazzi resources
seem to be going out of their way to NOT include links to the actual
publications which ostensibly for the basis of their blurbs, as if their readers
cannot be allowed to judge the merits of these studies...or compare the
actual studies with the accounts of our "esteemed" paparazzi.

The AGENDA:
The key words for which we hope to find the appropriate factual referents in
the massive upheaval in neuroscience technology and, thus, knowledge that
we see today is "EXPERIENCE".
The term of "EXPERIENCE" is basically a magic notion without reference
that we simply glide over as we speak. It is...at present...nothing more than a
notion of convenience to allow us to keep speaking till we reach the end of
our statement...but it disappears from our attention as soon as its syllables
have been uttered..and recede back into the darkness of our tacit
@neuroendocrinology pre-suppositional framework to haunt us the next time we need to speak
about "Memory" or "Identity" or a whole slew of other psychological terms.
Home The tendency is to tacitly presuppose that we even have a definition in the
first place...whereas with terms like "learning" and "experience" we lapse

language...and indeed have no definition.

We have lost track of the fact that life is lived from moment to moment,

where moments are not simply unit's of time but are, instead, a succession
of living acts which follow one upon the other.
And what is 're-presented" in our minds is not a picture or photograph or
other such passive depiction, but we ourselves are "re-presenting" an earlier
moment in a new guise, as we "re-call" or put together again what we say
we "re-member".
What is "experienced" may only be truly be said to be "experienced" when
somehow our mode of being in the world around us is impacted by one
moment in the course of our lives to somehow adjust/adapt/take into account
what just had happened.
Moments succeed each other, not like ticks on the clock, because a
"moment" in the manner in which we use it, is not a unit of time or duration,
but an event in our lives. These moments succeed each other and each
moment is the product in some way of our previous moments.
This manner in which "moments" are generated by us as we live is very
much akin to the manner in which generations of populations follow one
another in the life and vicissitudes of a species, and result in some sort of
evolutionary change...for better or worse.
Within us, our neural structures and connectivities must continue onward,
each "moment" being accompanied by an inner set of events which derive
from the past functions of our brainsChat

generation of a species
essentially reliving the ontogency of its ancestry and those same inner
structures, genetic and beyond, are re-invokved in a new generation.
So it is without brains and the manner in which our "moments" succeed each
other ..with the help of those brains. Our past "experiences" have shaped
our brains to act the way they do in the present. Just as natural selection
forces have shaped the genome and methylome of the creatures of any
species to act the way the do in subsequent generations.
And we do not use the term "generation" lightly, since it is we,who
"generate" these mometnt time and again, by means of the existing
capabilities and connections within our brains. We do so "anticipatorily" and

of any population of organisms is an "anticipation" of what might await them
in the world, so is the way our brain's connectivities are shaped by

experience, an anticipation of what we are to encounter in our next

The sad truth is that our Western languages all arise from early Greek times

divinity, after all.

Our language sneaks up on us and before we know it we have forgotten just

how they arose. We speak in those terms as if in a trance where we have no

that serve an ancient civilization to speak about the events in their lives.

one... since we don't realize that we have ONE to begin with...and an
arbitrary outdated one, probably rooted back in pre-Medieval Aristotelian
thought.
Even when the model paradigm shifts beneath our feet we don't think that
the very foundation may be the problem..
The problem gets more dire when we insist on the "obviousness" of the
model in which we think and speak in our everyday language and seek to
work downwards from the tacit presuppositional framework of ordinary
language and try to impose it on the models according to which we do
neuroscience, immunology of other areas.
What does "Observation" really mean? Who's Looking at What?
The notion of "observation" is a very odd one indeed..especially in our
culture. Karl.Popper (I'm not a big fan of his) did bring an interesting quote to
my attention from Darwin. He cited Darwin as having said, "We never
observe" but "we only observe whether" This is very much how the term
"observe" is used in our language system.
In the classic physical sciences, Nils Bohr received the Nobel Prize for
Physics in 1922 for his contributions which were essential to modern
understandings of atomic structure and quantum mechanics. Nils Bohr, ,
perhaps the leading spiritual" commentator on the advent of quantum

mortal presence on this planet , pose for ourselves in our own terms. And
the bogus question of whether our observational gaze settled upon reality
(of noumena) or a veiled reality (of epiphenomena) is sadly one of the
philosophically tragic-comic outcomes of such a perceptual gaze model of
observation.
Someone engaged in scientific observation can be said to "observe that
so-and-so is the case or is not' very much as the word observe: is often
used as a synonym for "remark" or "comment" of "state".
And then we 'observe whether or not..in our speaking in the context of our

of our language centers and we never merely "observe in the manner of
directed a 'gaze" at something...or report or depict what it was our

This was much what happened for example, for decades prior to the advent
of Einstein' special and general theories of relativity at the turn of the
century. It was unthinkable that the colloquial, street based vocabulary of
Euclid and Newton could be questioned, although the trail downward into
fact from that set of presuppositions was very problematic. The clues were
there in the facts that were being uncovered and could not be rationalized in
any coherent manner.
So, for me, we have, especially in neuroscience----where the threats to our
"remarks" are not as overwhelmingly obvious as in quantum physics, where,
for example,, 'ordinary language' has to be weighed and sifted and never
taken to be about the "facts"--- to be especially wary of the "framework" of
concepts which prop up our "observations" and determine which "whether"
we are are truly commenting upon, when we innocently believe ourselves to
be face to face with "facts'...
Does it really make any sense at all to consider that the statements of
science somehow reflect or depict some external so called "objective
"reality" which we are privileged to "observe" and understand via that
science and its theories?
Science is beautiful. Science is pleasing. Science advances and leads to
technology which changes and improves our world. But does that mean that

we sing in terms of metaphors/models.

Why not think of bird songs and the manner in which their brains and lives
intersect...and of how in some essential ways birdsong is a precursor of our
human language use. Would we eerattribute to "birdsongs" any kind of
distant and pictorial depicting of something called "reality"? Not to say that
those birdsongs do not guide the bird population and ultimately the species
through its journeys over the planet and through evolutionary time.
It would be silly to prattle on about deciding whether birdsongs were either
"subjective" or "objective'..wouldn't it?
Yet. the language use by birds creates a "world" in which they and their
actions and decisions live and are embodied and enacted interactively with
that "song". The song is what weaves the fabric of their world to be sure.

For us too, science is not some "third or fourth 'world" posturing and
positioned outside a reality it charts for us. Instead, science as "our song" is

winds through which our species must navigate. It is a means of our

science with our human bodies and our instruments, they would not even be

Science --that wonderful collective phenomenon. is the singing heard in our
skies, the buzzing in our hive....into which we are made living drones.....and
its usefulness and the "apparition of falsifiability" of propositions are only
attained by the phenotypic expression and expansion we experience
through our technology and instruments.
And here's a fine idea from Nils Bohr "We must be clear that when it comes
to atoms, language can be used only as in poetry. The poet, too, is not
nearly so concerned with describing facts as with creating images and
establishing mental connections.
As our scientific formulations grow and expand into ever greater complexity
they lead us to expand our phenotypic expression on the planet with
technologies and with instruments that are made possible by our belief in
this song we sing...and which in turn lead us, once they found to lead us to
places that exceed our understanding.....whether very large or very small or
very complex ...to alter our language and our models which shape the
statements of science...and that in turn allows us to build more instruments
and better technology still...and so on...and so on
Yet, we plod along in philosophical puerility and dream that our "song" must
have some isomorphic relationship to a primiitve extended reality outside
"US" How funny, don't you think?

mathematical formalisms and various metaphors that we use which are
guided by those formalisms to become intuitions

create more and better technologies and more and better instruments which
we believe to be in accord with the "certain" theories of that science. Yet we
trick ourselves into producing instruments which eventually produce
phenomena and measurements which cannot be reconciled with the "theory"
which spawned that technology

In neuroscience, it never ceases to puzzle me how the prevailing technology
of each era of scientific work is brought to bear in a metaphorical fashion in
our seeking to speak to each other about what our instruments tell us about
the brain.
But as often happens when a paradigm captures the minds of those in
'intellectual power" the "clues" which should rise upward from the scientific
research work to lead to the refining of our language use are ignored....until
the entire paradigm is dumped.
When the Newtonian paradigm of motion was expanded by Einstein...it was
actually only by questioning/challenging the very instruments which had
been constructed on the basic Euclidean and Newtonian theories....clocks
and rulers....from way back then.
As a result Einstein's paradigm shifting forced the scientific community to
radically change the definitions of basic terms like "mass' and "length" and
'time" had to change. And so on. As obvious as these terms had sounded to
them as they spoke about them and guided their thought within the
constraints of their tacit understandings...and MIS understandings of those
concepts....these definitions had to be finally

Surely our instruments and technology guiding us by the domain in which
they were used have led us to findings which now demand that the very
definitions which first propelled our investigations be amended, revised, and
better understood.

Researchers used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to image

the activity in the brains of 15 mathematicians when they viewed
mathematical formulae which they had individually rated as beautiful,
indifferent or ugly.
Brain scans show a complex string of numbers and letters in mathematical
formulae can evoke the same sense of beauty as artistic masterpieces and
music from the greatest composers.
