NCSS Standards: Culture and People, Places and Environments

Arkansas Curriculum Framework: G.10.2.3 Identify diverse groups that have
come to Arkansas and where they settled D2.Geo.7.K-2
(ARKANSAS CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK SLES/NCSS STANDARDS)

Students will be able to locate where the Caddo and Osage Indians settled in
Arkansas.
(LEARNING OBJECTIVES)

Students will be in classroom grouping for lecture and then they will
individually do the assignment.
(STUDENT GROUPING/INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN OF CLASSROOM)

I will use a PowerPoint to display facts and pictures the Caddo and Osage
Indians and where they all settled in comparison to the other in Arkansas. I
have chosen this method because it displays words with pictures to keep the
attention of the students. Also it is easier to follow along rather than just
listening to the lecture. Also a PowerPoint allows the ability to enlarge the
pictures and words for students that have a hard time seeing things just
written on the bored.
(TEACHING METHODS AND STRATEGIES)

(LESSON DESCRIPTION/ACTIVES)

PROCEDURES
1: INTRODUCTION EST. TIME: 3 minutes

Students will say what they already know or heard about the Indians native
to Arkansas. I will ask for a student volunteer to come to the bored and write
down these facts.
2: PROVIDING LESSON CONTENT EST. TIME: 5 minutes
I will show and read to the students a PowerPoint about the Caddo and Osage
Indians. Students will be given a map of Arkansas and a marker and be able
to locate where the Caddo and Osage Indians settled based on the lesson.

3: CLOSURE EST. TIME 7 minutes

Students will build their own tepee houses like the Indians.

4: EXTENSION ACTIVITES

As the students are making their tepee houses we will discuss the actual
houses the two Indian tribes we discussed lived in and the differences. I will
assign a writing assignment with the question, If you were one of these
tribes what tribe would you be and why? They are to pull from information
that they learned today and also incorporate new information from online or
a book from the library. The assignment will be due at the end of the week
and they will be hung around the classroom.
(MATERIALS, TECHNOLOGY AND MEDIA)

I used the internet to help me find the standards for social studies. I used
Pinterest to help find an activity for this lesson. I chose this website because
it has very fun and easy activities for kids to do along with how to do them. I
will use a PowerPoint to get the information of the lesson to the students. I
chose this method because PowerPoints are easy to make and also organize
and display content neatly. For the activity the students will use paper bags,
markers, and ribbon.
(ASSESSMENT)

I plan to assess the students twice. The first time I will assess them with a
handout of Arkansas and they will mark where the Indians settled based on
the lesson they just heard. The second time I plan to assess the students is
with the homework I assigned them. The students should use facts from the
PowerPoint and facts from online or a book to describe what tribe they would
be between the Caddo or Osage Indians and why. I have chosen these
approaches because the handout will assess if they were listening and
comprehending in class and the writing assignment will assess if they
retained the information in class and their ability to use technology with to
extend the lesson. I will use the results to decide if they are ready to move
on to the next groups of people whom settled in Arkansas.
