Title: What is Sleep Apnea

Date: July 10, 2012

Author: National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute

Synopsis:

The general idea of this website is that it gives an overview of what sleep apnea is and what some of

the causes and effects are. It presents an idea of what it does to the body when a person is sleeping. In other tabs,

it includes small descriptions of what some of the risks are, some of the causes, and how to treat it. This website

just gives the gist of the idea of sleep apnea with none of the specifics. This website leads thoughts to research

more on certain topics. Some of those topics will include: how often does the person breathes, how much of a

percentage is undiagnosed, how its recognized, and why it is caused. Most of the information is reviewed in a

video by researchers that did the HeartBeat study. The study is one of the few research projects that have been

done on sleep apnea and the record their findings in this video. Along with the video, the website recommends

related topics with sleep apnea. Some of them are high blood pressure, sleep deprivation, and obesity. This

website gives and overview of what sleep apnea is and how it is related to other topics.

Title: Oral Appliance Therapy

Date: August 7, 2015

Author: American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine

Synopsis:

The oral appliance for sleep apnea is the main focus of the project. It is known for the best and

easiest way to help people with sleep apnea. This website in particular focuses in on the appliance and how it

works. It relates to a study of the effectiveness of this technology by proving that it moves their jaw forward,

which opens the patients airway. The appliance is used to prevent snoring while sleeping. When a person snores

when sleeping, that means there is something blocking their airway to breathe effectively. The site relates the

advantages and disadvantages of the appliance to what life is like without the appliance. Some of these

advantages that are important include: comfortable, quiet, portable, and easy to take care of. Not every piece of

technology is perfect, but the appliance is most preferred. At the bottom of the page, it goes into who makes the

appliance and how long it takes to make with all the fittings with impressions.

Title: Sleep Apnea Causes

Date: August 15, 2015

Author: Mayo Clinic Staff

Synopsis:
The symptoms and causes are the real factors into knowing if a person has sleep apnea and it can

vary between people. Mayo Clinics website pinpoints exactly how sleep apnea can be prevented and what it can

cause during the day and night. Some of the causes that are the most common are being overweight, larger

necks, and having a smaller airway. It presents information about how the tests and diagnoses work. Also it cites

other information including complications with treatments and a persons lifestyle with and without the

treatment. There are many risks involved in have obstructive sleep apnea, the worst case of the disease. The

website describes that muscles in a persons throat relaxes and the tongue or tonsils can get in the way of your

airway. This is only one of the many causes of sleep apnea. A few of the factors the website cites during the day

for someone with sleep apnea is that the person can gain weight and cause a stroke or heart disorder. This

website gives great detail into their explanation of risk factors for this disease.

Title: Varieties of OSA Surgery

Date: 2015

Author: American Sleep Apnea Association

Synopsis:

There is a certain type of surgery a person with severe sleep apnea can get instead of using the

mouth appliance or the CPAP machine. The American Sleep Apnea Association lists a few of the possible

surgeries someone can get to cure their sleep apnea. They explain that it depends on the reason of the patient

having sleep apnea that changes the surgery that the patient will have. Majority of the surgeries include opening
or enlarging the airway so the patient can sleep peacefully such as: hyoid placement, tongue base reduction,

lower jaw enhancement. This website has in depth details about each surgery and what the surgeon will do. In

conclusion, the writer talks about how certain surgeries are for certain people and what causes their sleep apnea

and how severe it is. This website gives a specific and helpful idea of how there are many surgeries known that

can help cure people with sleep apnea.

Title: CPAP Therapy: How it Works, Getting Set-up, & Results

Date: July17, 2014

Author: Kevin Phillips

Synopsis:

The CPAP machine is the one of the first treatments for sleep apnea. The machine is a mask that

filters and helps air flow into a persons lungs as they sleep at night. On this website, a blog gives a first hand

experience and knowledge to help others like themselves. The purpose of the blog was to give information to

people with sleep apnea from someone who knows a lot on the subject and that they know from experience. In

Kevin Phillips blog, he describes how the machine works, why it helps, and the results he has had with it. The

information about how it works describe each part on the CPAPthe hose, motor, and maskand how it all

comes together to help someone with sleep apnea. Also, Kevin describes how different designs of the mask part
of the CPAP may take extra or fewer steps to putting it on and how is does not make any change the quality. To

conclude, the blog presents information on some of the effects of using and not using the CPAP machine and

some of the downsides with using it. This website gives a decent idea of what the CPAP machine does on a daily

basis.

Title: Sleep Apnea Tests and Diagnosis

Date: February 27, 2016

Author: David T. Derrer, MD

Synopsis:

The idea of the website is to simplify the concept of sleep apnea. It is aimed towards people who are

unsure if they have the disease and how they can possibly prevent sleep apnea overall. WebMD goes into

detailed responses in an article written for patients to know what to expect when they go in for a sleep study. The

writer states the name and describes some of the machines that are used in a study and why they work when

diagnosing sleep apnea. Some of the machines that are used are a nasal airflow sensor to record airflow when

sleeping and an EEG (electroencephalogram) that records brain wave activities what the patient is not sleeping.

The reason that is given that these two machines work for a sleep apnea study is that when the nasal airflow

sensor records the airway is closed or almost closed, oxygen can not get into the brain, in which comes in the

EEG to record brain activity. People with sleep apnea have less brain activity that those who dont. This website

gives a thorough idea of why sleep study equipment is important and not having a doctor diagnose right on the
spot.

Title: Efficacy of Custom Made Oral Appliance For Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Date: September 2015

Author: V. R. Cilil, N. K. Sapana Varma, Siby Gopinath, and V. V. Ajith

Synopsis:

The oral appliance is now one of main devices to help sleep apnea. It does not cure sleep apnea, but

in this article, it describes all sides of a study that went into making the appliance. In the beginning it states the

objectives and analysis of what the scientists already knew and what they want to expanded upon. This

eventually will lead into the making of the appliance that is known today. In the intro of the whole study, the

writers bring up the CPAP and why it works and use that information to appliance. They reference the causes and

that most of the them are due to the closing of the airway. The methods and materials they use are the severity,

the body mass, and the neck circumference to customize the appliance they are trying to make. As the article

goes on, the study of the design, procedure, and airway analysis leads to why the made the appliance design that

is used today and the results the patients have. The article describes different scales like the sleepiness scale and

how severe the sleep apnea is before and after the appliance is use. This website gives a thorough idea why the

appliance works and how it came to be.
