ME-210 Heat Transfer

Assignment 4
1. (I&D 5.32) Consider a semiconductor processing tool as shown in the figure. If the
chuck made of Al alloy 2024 (=2770 kg/m3, c=880 J/kg-K, k=179 W/m-K) is
originally at a uniform temperature of 100 oC, and is cooled by air at 15 oC and a
uniform h of 50 W/m2-K, calculate the time required for the lower surface of chuck to
reach 25 oC

2. (I&D 5.37) Steel is sequentially heated and cooled (annealed) to relieve stress and make it
less brittle. Consider a 100 mm thick plate (k = 45 W/m-K, =7800 kg/m3, c=500 J/kg-K)
initially at a uniform temperature of 300 oC and is heated on both sides in a gas furnace
for which T = 700 oCand h = 500 W/m2-K. How long will it for the minimum
temperature in the plate to reach 550 oC.
3. (I&D 5.45) A plastic coating is applied to wood panels by first depositing a molten
polymer on the wood and then cooling the surface of the polymer by subjecting it to air
flow at 25 oC. As a first approximation, the heat of reaction associated wth solidification
of the polymer can be neglected. And the polymer/wood interface may be assumed
adiabatic

If the thickness of the coating is L = 2 mm, and it has an initial uniform temperature (Ti)
of 200 oC, how long will it take for the surface to achieve a safe-to-touch temperature of
42 oC, if the convection coefficient can be assumed to be 200 W/m2-K. The properties of
plastic can be taken as, k = 0.25 W/m-K ,
= 1.20 x 10-7 m2/s ,.
4. (I&D 5.74) A tile-iron consists of a massive plate maintained at 150 oC by an embedded
heater. The plate is brought in contact with a tile to soften the adhesive, allowing the tile
to be lifted from the sub-flooring. The adhesive will soften sufficiently, if heated above
50 oC for at least 2 minutes, but its temperature should not exceed 120 oC to avoid
deterioration of the adhesive. Assume the tile and the sub-floor to have an initial
temperature of 25 oC and to have equivalent thermo-physical properties of k = 0.15 W/m-
K, cp = 1.5 x 103 J/m3-K

(a) How long will it take a worker using the tile iron to lift the tile? Will the adhesive
temperature exceed 120 oC?
(b) If the iron has a square surface area, 250 mm to a side, how much energy has has been
removed from the iron during the time it has taken to lift the tile.
5. (I&D 5.77) An insurance company has hired you as a consultant to improve their
understanding of burn injuries. They are especially interested in injuries induced when a
workers body comes into contact with machinery that is at elevated temperatures in the
range of 50 oC to 100 oC. Their medical consultant informs that irreversible thermal
injury (cell death) will occur when any living tissue is maintained at T 48 oC for
duration greater than or equal to 10 s. They want information concerning the extent of
irreversible tissue damage (in terms of depth measured from skin surface) as a function of
machinery temperature and the time for which the contact is made between the machinery
and the skin. Assume that the living tissue has a normal temperature of 37 oC, and has
properties equivalent to that of water. To assess the seriousness of the problem, compute
locations in the tissue at which the temperature will reach 48 oC after 10 s of exposure to
machinery at 50 oC and 100 oC
6. (I&D 5.84) Two stainless steel plates (k = 15 W/m-K, =8000 kg/m3, c=500 J/kg-K), each
20 mm thick and insulated on one surface are initially at 400 K and 300 K respectively
and are brought in contact at their uninsulated surfaces. What is the insulated surface
temperature of the hot plate after 1 minute has elapsed.
7. Use finite difference to solve
d 2
2
m 2 = 0 In the domain 0<x<1
dx
The boundary condition being T(x=0) = 1, dT/dx(x=1)=0.
Take 11 nodes and obtain the solution and compare with the exact solution that was
derived in the class.
8. Consider transient conduction in one dimension given by the governing equation:
1 T 2 T
= in the domain -1 x 1: The initial and boundary conditions are:
t x 2
T(0,x) = 0; T(t,-1) = 1, T(t,1) = 1. Let the value of be = 1 m2/s.
Let us assume that you are going to solve the problem by explicit finite difference method
by taking 11 nodes.
(a) What will be the maximum time step allowed by stability limit.
(b) Taking a time step with a value 10% lower than the stability limit compute the values
of T at all nodes for upto a maximum time of t = 5. Compare the results of the
temperature at T (t,0) with the one term analytical solution derived in the class by means
of a temperature time plot. Comment
(c) Now take the time step 10% more than stability limit and redo the problem. Do you
find difficulty?
9. Repeat the same problem with implicit method. Repeat parts (b) and (c) and report the
results. Compile your observations (This is an optional problem for those who are
interested)
