NARRATIVE REPORT ON GLOBAL HANDWASHING DAY

S.Y. 2016-2017

Global Handwashing Day is a way to support a global and local culture of handwashing with
soap, shine a spotlight on the state of handwashing in each country and raise awareness about the
benefits of handwashing with soap. Since 2008, Global Handwashing Day has been celebrated
annually on October 15 worldwide. The Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing with Soap
founded Global Handwashing Day encourages school children, teachers and families to get involved.

To promote handwashing with soap, the Department of Education implemented the 2016
Global Handwashing Day Celebration last October 15, 2016 with the theme: Make Handwashing a
Habit! For handwashing to be effective it must be practiced consistently at key times, such as after
using the toilet or before contact with food. While habits must be developed over time, this theme
emphasizes the importance of handwashing as a ritual behavior for long-term sustainability. Habit
formation is currently a hot topic in behavior change and the water, sanitation, and hygiene sector.
This theme taps into that interest and is also a gateway to discussing what the sector knows about
how habits are formed. This celebration was enjoined and participated by all schools.

As one of the public elementary schools in the Division of Leyte, Mohon Primary School
supported and conducted this activity. The program started with a prayer and followed by the singing
of National Anthem. The Teachers gave their message and some insights regarding on the is activity..
At 9:00 a.m. we began our hand washing activity (before recess), recess time and hand washing
activity (after recess). Each pupil observed and followed the proper steps of hand washing.

Mohon Primary School successfully implemented the Global Handwashing Day.
