SCVCS Student Spotlight: Caleb Grant
Caleb Grant is a senior here at SCVCS. Caleb is a part of a program run
by Honeywell that teaches leadership skills to students from all over the world. It
takes place at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Caleb
spent a week there this March. Calebs dad is employed by Honeywell and this is
a program offered to the children of Honeywell employees.
In Calebs
opinion, there
are no nega-
tives to the pro-
gram except
that he had to
miss a week of
school but at- CALEB
tending SCVCS
makes this a
possibility.
When asked
what the best thing about the program was, Caleb expressed that he enjoyed
meeting so many wonderful people from all places around the earth who share
the same mindset as him. The one thing he would like to see is the program reach
out to even more countries so more students could get involved with HCLA.
Caleb was asked to share some tips to students aspiring to get involved with the
U.S. Space and Rocket Center. He believes the best tip he can give is that you
must have patience with your peers. Not everyone at HCLA is on the same level
when it comes to speaking English so patience is key. During teamwork exercises
it is good to be open minded when it comes to problem-solving. Caleb shared
that this also means that you must be able to trust your teammates and that his or
her ideas will work. Another tip Caleb would like to share is to not be afraid to get
out of your comfort zone. He says, You would be surprised at how much you can
truly accomplish. Calebs last tip is to just have fun with whatever you are doing
at the moment.
Great tips, Caleb! Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
SCVCS Teacher Spotlight: Dr. Flynn
My full name is Philip Dunne Flynn, III, which indicates that there were two others who shared my
name (my father and grandfather and actually my great grandfather who was named Philip Dunne).
I currently live in Lexington, SC, but grew up in Union, SC. I attended the University of South Carolina
where I earned a BA in History, a Masters of Education in Social Studies, an Education Specialist de-
gree in Educational Leadership, and a PhD in Education Administration. All degrees were earned at
the University of South Carolina.
I am married. My wife Karen is a retired RN and Teacher. I have three children, Philip IV (my Optome-
trist), Sean (my Dentist), and Lauren (Occupational Therapist) and five grandchildren. In my spare
time, I enjoy a good book, strong coffee, visiting Charleston, listening to oldies radio, watching Game-
cock sports, and attending the grandchildrens soccer matches and dance recitals.
I have enjoyed 44 years as an educator in South Carolinas public school system. I began my career in
Saluda School District One where I taught secondary social studies for five years. I then served as a
middle school assistant principal for five years and elementary principal for six years. In 1989, I moved
to Barnwell to become Principal of Barnwell High School. I remained at the high school as principal
until 2003, at which time I moved to the District Office. In 2006, I became Deputy Superintendent for
Academics in Fairfield County School District. I also served as President of the South Carolina High
School League Executive Committee, as a mentor of principals and an assessor of aspiring administra-
tors. I have led several technical assistance visits for High Schools that Work and served on numerous local,
state, and regional committees and evaluation teams.
I retired briefly in 2008, but returned to education within six weeks taking on special projects for the
South Carolina Department of Education. Since April 2009, I have served as SCVCS High School Ad-
ministrator and Director of Federal Projects. SCVCS is, to me, the flagship of virtual schools. We are
able to provide a first-class educational opportunity to a growing number of young people through-
out the state. The teachers and administrators that I am privileged to work with are outstanding. As a
virtual school, we are not confined to geographic borders in selecting our teaching staff. Therefore,
we are able to select the best teachers in the state regardless of location. Working with these innova-
tive educators and young people has contributed to my eagerness to continue to contribute to our
school and continue to provide this option to the students of South Carolina.
Thank you, Dr. Flynn, for sharing your story and for all of the wonderful things that you do for
our school, staff and students.
