Subject Science

Grade Level 4

4.8 The student will investigate and understand the relationships among Earth, the moon,
Learning Objective and the sun. Key concepts include

Content

a) the motions of Earth, the moon, and the sun;

b) the causes for Earths seasons;
c) the causes for the phases of the moon;
d) the relative size, position, age, and makeup of Earth, the moon, and the sun; and
e) historical contributions in understanding the Earth-moon-sun system.
Activity (At this point we have already gone over the planets in the Solar
System for SOL 4.7, including order and size of each)
1. Introduce the lesson Learning about the Sun, Earth, and
Moon
- First slide introduces the BIG BANG THEORY (because the
BBT is not part of this SOL, the brief intro is all that is
needed)
2. Slide 2 is a quick recap of the prior SOL. Ask students to
name the planets in order. (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars,
Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune)
3. FLASH QUIZ before introducing sun information (true)
4. Introduce the EARTH slides.
- Discuss the differences between a rotation and a
revolution.
- On the next slide, have the students discuss why they
think Earth is the only planet with life.
- Allow volunteers to tap the globes for fun facts
- Show learn link video to show an animation of the solar
system.
5. The next slide discusses Earths axis
- Briefly explain northern and southern hemisphere, day
and night.
- Have students drag the Earth around the revolution path
and as its being dragged, have students explain where it
is night and where it is day.
- See if students can identify where the US is and in what
hemisphere.
6. Revolution vs. Rotation
- Review the revolution vs. rotation from the initial Earth
slide.
- Have students stand up and demonstrate both.
Pedagogy

7. Discuss the revolution and rotation times for each of the

other planets.
- Have students compare these rotations and revolutions to
that of Earth.
- Have students determine the shortest and longest
rotation time and revolution time in Earth day and year
units.
- On the next slide, have students openly discuss the
question before pulling out the answer.
8. FLASH QUIZ (recap) (A)
9. FLASH QUIZ (recap) (B)
10. Briefly review hemispheres and the axis and introduce
seasons
11. On Seasons slide, have students discuss what happens
during the year based on when the Earth is facing which way,
then reveal answers under the boxes together.
- On the next slide, discuss how the rotation helps
determines the seasons for different hemispheres.
- Discuss the position of the Earth and distance from the
sun.
- Quick Check!! Have students tell you which picture
belongs in which box and why. Open discussion.
12. FLASH QUIZ False
13. Introduce the moon and its relationship to Earth.
- Show learn link video.
14. Review rotation vs. revolution and show how the moon does
to the Earth what the Earth does to the sun.
- Have students determine where the answer from the
yellow box goes.
15. Explain phases of the moon and how it happens.
- Have 3 student volunteers demonstrate this with one
being the sun (and holding a flashlight), one being the
earth, and one being the moon.
- Show learn link video.
16. Discuss eclipses and how they happen
- Play learn link video
17. FLASH QUIZ (recap) (C)
18. Go over the vocabulary slides (6 of them). Use the shades on
the vocabulary slides to only reveal the definition first and
see if they students can determine the word.
