Annotated Bibliography on Renewable Energy: Solar Power

Chakravorty, U., Roumasset J., and Tse, K. (1997). Endogenous Substitution among
Energy Resources and Global Warming, Journal of Political Economy, Vol. 105,
No. 6, pp. 1201-1234.

This article is a prediction of how solar systems could reduce global warming that
was written in 1997. One prediction that if the world governments would implement
more funding towards renewable energy it would be beneficial towards the
prevention and reduction of global warming. The data that is being used are global
numbers; the author uses these numbers to give his predictions support. With These
predictions they give the use of solar panel systems credit in reducing global
warming, along with other renewable resources. The main energy recourse that the
article is using are petroleum, coal, natural gas, and electricity; the article also goes
into how each could be improved if other means are researched. This article could
benefit my paper with comparing these predictions with what has happened in the
last 20 years; also, if these predictions where correct. This article has important
information that could be used with other data from another article.

SOLAR ENERGY. (2012). Federal Initiatives Overlap but Take Measures to Avoid
Duplication (GAO-12-843). Washington, DC: U.S. 20548. United States
Government Accountability Office.

This is a government research paper on the initiatives from six federal agencies that
they have open for solar energy research, there is 65 initiatives, out of the 65 over
half of them are strictly solar projects. This government document describes the
goals and methods of each of the project, research has been done for residential,
Department of Defense, commercial, and Aeronautics. Although there are multiple
initiatives, a majority of the initiatives overlap in research and projects. Even
though the programs do overlap there is no unnecessary duplication of efforts, to
improve the efficacy of the initiatives, to avoid this all the departments and federal
agencies have good coordination between the teams. This government report shows
most of the research that the federal government has done and what will be done in
the future. I would use this to show support for the renewable energies importance.

Redweik P., Catita C., Brito M. (2013). Solar energy potential on roofs and facades in
an urban landscape, Solar Energy, 97, 332-341.
www.sciencedirect.com

This source describes and shows the possibilities of installing solar energy systems
on urban builds. This article also shows that with using the LiDAR system to scan
buildings at different times of the day, with the scans from the LiDAR system the
team shows exactly where the most solar irradiance occurs. With this information
they would be able to determine the optimal placement of panels in an urban
2

landscape. The article uses the Campus of the University of Lisbon is

Lisbon, Portugal as their test sit for the LiDAR scans. The scans of the college
campus shows the optimal areas for solar energy systems to be placed. This article
would give the support needed for a massive solar energy move with using
technology that already exists to pin point the most effective locations for the solar
panels.

Active power control in a hybrid PV-storage power plant for frequency support.
Solar Energy, 144, 4962.
www.sciencedirect.com

This paper shows how the solar/ photovoltaic (PV) systems are going to be storing
electricity, also how the solar systems are configured to the gird and how power
companies will maintain an efficient and reliable power supply to the population.
They discuss two different strategies in the article. One way was using a power
generator when the PV system cannot maintain the power load normally at night or
during massive power loads on the power grid, the other is having a power storage
system such as batteries, or a hybrid of the both with batteries and a power
generator system. With this paper the authors discover that with the controller on
the hybrid PV systems they have a slight delay and the system will send a ripple of
power through the grid. They solved that problem with the implementation of a
code to prevent the generators and battery systems to delay and create a ripple. I
would use this paper to help explain how the PV systems will be maintaining a
consistent power supply during the low and high points of a power demand. Also
how PV systems could be used in a larger scale for more urban areas.

A Head. (2015, September 26). Solar Energy Pros and Cons: 10 Myths Debunked
https://us.sunpower.com

The author of this article Andrew Head, works for Sun Power this company has
been in the solar energy sales and manufacturing since 1985 with over 30 years of
experience. Sun Power is a sales, research, and manufacturing company that installs
solar on residential and commercial properties. This article discusses ten major
myths about solar energy, some of those being if solar panels work in colder
climate, if they last longer then ten years, or if solar energy is still to new of
technology to trust. With in the article Head states other sources to back his claims
with research done by the company and research down by the Department of
Energy. This article and website will be beneficial for the use of the local aspect and
privet research done by a company that has been manufacturing and researching
solar energy for 32 years.

and policies of the leading countries in solar energy. Renewable and Sustainable
Energy Reviews, 15, 713720.

Annotated Bibliography 3

This analysis on the photovoltaic (PV) electricity explains how renewable is and
will benefit the emissions of CO2 to bring down the amount that the generation of
electricity. With breaking down how much electricity is being produces by other
countries around the world, also show how the price have risen for all forms power
generation. With the rising cost, researchers have looked to make PV more
affordable by increasing the efficiency of the PV systems and the cost to
manufacture the PV systems. This article looks directly into how to reduce the
effects that generating electricity place on global warming, with reducing the use of
coal, gas, and oil to generate electricity. This article will benefit me by giving me
even more research to back my claims that solar is the most beneficial source of
renewable energy. With the use of world research I would be able to compare
different countries PV generation.

Ball J., Reicher D. (2017, March 21). Making Solar Big Enough to Matter. The
New York Times,

https://www.nytimes.com

This article is based off the opinion of the authors; their opinion is based from a
business, political, and economical standpoint. The authors speak in favor for solar
becoming a larger infrastructure in America as well as the world. With the China
building cheaper solar panels then America, that that puts a strain not only the U.S.
but also the power grid as well with lower quality panels makes them less efficient.
With the solar becoming a bipartisan issue and the popularity growing. There must
be something done politically to push for more renewable energy sources. With the
Silicon Valley being the number one raw material that is needed for the solar panels,
the U.S. has the upper hand to produce the panels. Renewable energy just needs the
political push to make solar a big thing in the U.S. This article will help with an
update feeling of how the solar energy systems to matter to the people of the U.S.
