Safety policies and procedures are required when safety in the workplace is a
must. Safety is important because the employee safety matters. It can also
cost the company lost man hours, insurance costs, workers compensation
premiums, and legal costs. It is the employers and employee responsibility to
maintain a safe workplace.

SAFETY POLICY

Establishing a safety management system can help in focusing on the efforts

at improving the work environment. This system will describe what the
employees will do to prevent injuries and illnesses in the workplace. For a
small business it may simply involve listening to the employees concerns
and respond to them or have a written policy and a full-time safety director.
Larger businesses may be subject to more safety procedures. Companies
that educate employees on safety procedures will benefit in a company that
will have zero accidents and may improve on the efficiency and effectiveness
of the production process.

FIVE BEST PRACTICES TO ENSURE SAFETY IN THE

WORKPLACE

I. Make a commitment

Provide the resources needed to protect employees.

Emphasize the importance on workplace safety in all meeting.
Audit all work practices or unhealthy conditions.

II. Involve employees

Establish a safety committee.

Have daily safety inspections.
Listen to employees input and feedback.
III. Comply with regulations

Develop safety works classes and consultations or required

programs.
Maintain the OSHA 300 log if required.
Identify the OSHA regulations in the workplace.

IV. Train employees

About hazards they may be exposed to at work.

Provide safety orientation.
Retrain new employees.

V. Continue to improve the system

Review annually and as needed.

Investigate all accidents.
Conduct frequent inspections.

Employers and employees who work together to make safety a priority will
have a very safe place to work. They will be able to work more productively
and production will run smoothly.
