The intrinsic human act of place-making is the basic principle driving the design conceptualization.
Humankinds desire to mark their presence on the landscape is the fundamental driving force to make a
place identifiable to their kind or collective group belongs to them. The collective social activities are cantered
around a public space associated with the community. Traditionally, this appeared in the simplest forms as:
street, junction, and yard; and in more elaborate urban forms as: city square, park, hall, and stadium.

2.1 General climate in Selangor

Selangor is one of the eleven original states, and both the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya
were once part of the state of Selangor before the federal government took over both areas. Located centrally
on the west coast side of the peninsula, the three areas therefore share similar weather characteristics.
Being located so close to the equator, Peninsular Malaysia does not have distinct seasons such as spring,
summer, autumn or winter.
Instead the temperature is rather uniform throughout the year, with high humidity and copious rainfall.
Situated in the doldrums, although Malaysia has abundant sunshine, it is extremely rare to have a full day with
completely clear skies, due to the presence of cloud cover at various times during the day. Conversely, it is
also exceedingly rare to have days with completely no sunshine.
But it is usually not the heat that most tourists find difficult to handle, it is the humidity. The mean monthly
humidity can range from 70 to 90%, which can leave you drenched in sweat after a short walk! Fortunately
most buildings are air-conditioned, and a quick hop into a shopping mall will quickly cool you down.
Wind-flow in Malaysia is generally light and variable; however there are some recognisable variations in the
wind-flow patterns throughout the year. These can be generalized into four periods: the South-West Monsoon,
the North-East Monsoon and two shorter inter-monsoon periods.
During the two inter-monsoons of April-May and October, an equatorial trough lies over Malaysia, and winds
are variable.
Rainfall in Malaysia is copious, averaging 2409mm (94.8 inches) of rainfall in a year, 200mm average per
month. The maximum rainfall in the Selangor / Kuala Lumpur area tends to fall during the inter-monsoon
months when the equatorial trough lies over Malaysia.

2.2 Maximum, Minimum and Average Temperature

Figure 2.2
The maximum temperature at the area day time above 37.5c while during night time the minimum
temperature is 26.5c, its happened in February, during Chinese New year. Where the minimum
temperature reach day time around 33c and night time below 27.5c around October.

2.3 Rain Fall

Figure 2.3
This is the average rainfall and rain days in The Arc area. Rainfall decrease to minimum during Jun and the
maximum rainfall amount is during November.

2.4 Wind Speed and wind direction

Figure 2.4

The direction of wind in Malaysia is various depends on the time and season. The highest wind speed is
around October and the lowest wind speed is around January to March. Wind direction also affect the overall
building design where to maximize the air flow around the building.

2.5 Cloud and humidity

Figure 2.5
Malaysia is a country that is humid. Therefore, the percentage for humidity is higher than other country. Due
to maximum rainfall in November, humidity also reach the highest point in that month. Compare to August to
October, the air is less humid than the other months. Where the percentage of humidity is relatively to the
percentage of cloud.

The Arc locate in the tropical area which has high temperature and also humidity. The functional
programme is identified as facilitating events, multimedia activities, incorporated flexibility, and bio-
climatic design. The bio-climatic agenda focuses on controlled natural day lighting and cross-
ventilation with integrated landscaping and vegetation both on ground levels and green roof.

3.0 MAIN MATERIAL USED

Material System Intrinsic Properties
Densit Strengt Environmenta Therma Acousti Appearanc
y h l l c e
Concrete Structural x x x
and Concrete has relatively high compressive strength, but low level of tensile
Enclosur strength, as such it is usually reinforced with materials that are strong in tension.
e The elasticity of concrete is relatively constant at low stress levels but begins to
decrease at higher stress level as matrix cracking develops. Concrete has a
moderate thermal conductivity and is a poor insulator. A layer of concrete is
frequently used for 'fireproofing' of steel structures. However, the term fireproof is
inappropriate, for high temperature fires can be hot enough to induce chemical
changes in concrete, which in the extreme can cause considerable structural
damage to the concrete.

Sand and Stones Structura x x

l Sand is primarily composed of finely granulated silica and, it can
include various rock, coral, and shell or lava fragments. It is
lightweight and easily transported by wind and water. Its
composition directly affects its colour, resulting in black, white,
pink and green colouring. Thus, giving an opportunity for
architecture/ designer to play with its combination of colours.

And *Aluminium is highly resistant to corrosion. It also has the added benefit of being
Enclosur lighter than steel with comparable strength. Aluminium can also be easily and
repeatedly recycled. Applications of metals used for architectural purpose includes
e roofing and decorating. Steel also provides several advantages such as:
-Steel is structurally sound and manufactured to strict specifications and
tolerances.
-Any excess material is 100% recyclable.
*Steel does not easily warp, buckle, twist or bend, and is therefore easy to modify
and offers design flexibility.
-Steel is cost effective and rarely fluctuates in price. Easy to install.
-Steel allows for improved quality of construction and less maintenance, while
offering improved safety and resistance
-With the propagation of mold and mildew in residential buildings, using steel
minimizes these infestations. Mold needs moist, porous material to grow. Steel
studs do not have those problems.

The ARC encompasses an elevated green roof deck, Bandar Rimbayus Show Gallery and offices
and the future clubhouse. The elevated green roof deck is designed to accommodate the sunlight,
heat, humidity and rain of Malaysias tropical climate. Shaped as a tall and wide covered walkway
embracing the communal green open space in the centre, it boasts an innovative roof that keeps the
space below cool using soil and plants as insulation. At the open side, each end is lowered to form a
ramp providing pedestrian access to the green roof deck that serves an upper level pedestrian
network of garden paths. The roof deck also offers higher vantage points to enjoy views across the
Bandar Rimbayu Township. The materials of roof deck are concrete, steel, stones and sands where
the plants they are using are English Ivy.
Stones and sand tiles are use at the edge of the field to create the boundary between inner and outer
space. Where the steel cladding bar is to let the plants grow and easier for them to do cleaning and
grooming basic for the plants.
In addition, the green roof deck filters collected rainwater into the recreational creek which is then
used for irrigation. The roof deck also aids in cooling the area via evaporation when the water is
channelled through drips on each column that supports the roof deck. The cooling effect is
heightened by the climbing plants on each column and when a breeze blows through the area.
Therefore, Bandar Rimbayu does not use any water from Syabas water to irrigate the plants.
These collectively represent one of the largest rainwater harvesting areas around and helps save on
water bills.
A pair of ramps lead from one side of
the football pitch onto the green roof,
which is a fraction of the size of that
planned by Rafael Violy for a
development in Silicon Valley. If
approved, Violy's 12-hectare roof park
will be the largest in the world. Metal
caging built around concrete columns
encourages climbing plants, and holes in
the canopy allow the branches of trees to
poke through the middle of rings of
planting on the roof.

Also part of the green and sustainable effort are the photovoltaic panels on the IJM sales office roofs.
They generate enough electricity to sell back to TNB.
The sales gallery also uses some raw and recycled materials as decorative features. These include
using colour bottle caps to sketch out the master plan, using aluminium cans to decorate the
receptionists table and using old bamboo and tube paper rolls as wall features on the office staircase
and more.

4.0 DESIGN CRITERIAL

Simultaneously, it needs to respond to the environment, particularly in addressing the sunlight, heat, humidity
and rain of the tropical climate. Correspondingly, it takes the form of a tall and wide covered walkway to
shelter the intended community activities. The roof solution responds to the desire to keep itself and the space
below cool by sustainable means: insulating with soil and greenery. In doing so it effectively replaces the
original greenery at ground plane with an new eco-system on elevated deck that not only provides open space
for recreation but also offers higher vantage points to enjoy views across a fairly flat township and the
activities below. The slowly rising roof structure and green roof-deck is regarded as an expression of
humankinds primal nature of working from and modifying the landscape in response to place-making for a
community by putting their mark on the land effectively conducting the act of making a landmark in the most
basic form. The landmark does not need to be a symbolic object to be looked at, but should fundamentally
serve the basic communal functions and as a place for human experience and encounter. This is the basic
principle adopted in the design conceptualization.

4.1 Sustainability
The approach to sustainability is taken holistically. Beyond building sustainably (Green Building Index design
principles), it is equally important to start from the long term perspective in building community awareness in
sustainability through initiatives programs, community projects and education to achieve a way of life, culture
and attitude of sustainability amongst the people of community from young to old. In fact, the software (the
practice) is more important, timeless and hence, more sustainable than the hardware (the building). The Arc is
designed to be a living and evolving education showcase of sustainable approach.
Each sustainable solution is intended to be a means rather than the end itself. Therefore each of green solution
has a corresponding purpose, as such:
Green roof deck insulates and filters collected rainwater before discharging to the canal waterways. The
water is channel through drips at each column grown with climbing plants, thereby promoting evaporative
cooling as breeze passes through. This emulates the process of nature and thus intending to provide a lesson in
how the natural environment works.
The recreational canal is simultaneously a rainwater collection vessel, the contents of which can be reused
for irrigation of plants.
Adaptive use/re-use capability of the canopy walkway allows the space below to function as a pedestrian
street whereby additional shop-lots and amenities can be introduced as the demand requires. Design solutions
include removable floor covering over services strips for future installation.
Community vegetable gardens promote integration among the residents and education on the values being
self-reliant, fostering cooperation and the principles of growing and harvesting agricultural produce. In
connection with this program, recycling centre and organic composting sites are also envisioned.
Promotion of active and healthy lifestyle through design that encourages walking and cycling, community
interaction, sports and recreation in daily activities through integrated usage and a common centre.

5.0 CONCLUSION
Garis Architects win lots of award from this project, such as:
-Green Architecture 2016 - Green GOOD DESIGN 2016 The Worlds Leading Sustainable Green Design
(Organised by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design)
-2014 Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards: Excellence Award - Landscape Design Award Category
-2014 PAM Green Excellence Awards: Silver Award - (Organised by The Edge)
-2014 PAM Awards: Silver Award for Commercial (Mixed Development & Hospitality) Category
-2014 PAM Awards: Silver Awards - Special Category
The most significant achievement is perhaps in managing to convince the client, a mass market developer and
infrastructure builder, to accept the project intent and solution that do not represent traditional expectations of
a landmark architecture - instead evolving from community and sustainable approach to place-making for the
people in general. The success and acceptance can be seen in the way the marketing of the township is centred
on The Arc as a symbolic identity or icon for marketing collaterals and billboards. In being able to identify
with an icon (as opposed to the intent of being an iconic building), the philosophies of the township
development are succinctly summed up in an image, thus putting this man-made intervention on the land in an
act of place-making for the community.
