Fan the Flames of Faith
G ods prophets do not only
proclaim Gods message to
his people, but they also bring
the peoples concerns to God.
In his own time, Habakkuk
gave voice to the pleading
and deepest yearning of Juda
for God and his saving help.
The kingdom of Juda, after
having forged a losing alliance
with Assyria, was captured by
Babylon. Habakkuk joined
thousands of his compatriots
who were taken prisoners to
Babylon, uprooted from their
land, and became slaves in a
foreign kingdom. The people
of Juda understood that their
defeat and slavery were not
the result of mere superior
military might, but because
they had broken the Covenant
with God and had disobeyed
his prophets. Overcome with
shame and sorrow, the prophet
pleaded for Juda: How long,
O Lord, must I cry for help and
you do not listen? Habakkuk
ranted against violence,
iniquity, destruction, and evil.
In the face of all these, does
God remain unaffected?
God immediately responds,
speaking about an appointed
time, a testimony to the
end; it will not disappoint.
He counsels us against being
rash (have no integrity),
and advises us to wait for
it. By human reckoning, the
Babylonian exile that lasted
70 years seemed too much of
a delay but God in his infinite
wisdom made the promise,
and he had kept his promise.
In 586 B.C. Persia defeated
Babylon, and afterwards sent
the people of Juda back home
so that they could rebuild their
Temple and to reclaim their
lives as a people.
The Apostle Paul, himself
also a prisoner, speaks to
us about keeping faith. He
is taken captive because he
proclaimed the Gospel of the
risen Christ. Now in his senior
years, and having no assurance
if he would come out of
jail alive, Paul continues to
receive reports how Christians
continue to be threatened by
harassment, false teachings,
and even betrayals from false
brethren. Despite the grim
landscape, and his own sorry
condition in jail, Paul remains
upbeat and encourages his
disciple Timothy who is
described to be timid and
sickly. Paul admonishes the
young bishop to fan the flames
and to guard the deposit of
faith with the help of the Holy
Spirit that dwells within us.

established, the precious pieces
of jewelries were deposited to
the Temple for safekeeping.
The deposit of faith that
the Apostle Paul entrusts to
Timothy is not mere objects
to acquire permanently, once
and for all. Rather, the Holy
Spirit will continually and
ceaselessly reanimate us in
accepting faith in Jesus Christ.
At times we feel like mighty
conquerors riding the crest
of waves of challenges, but
at other times the waves of
doubts engulf us and bring
us into deep waters. Or at
times there is nothing left but
dryness.
The apostles in todays
Gospel plead with Jesus for
help. Increase our faith.
Jesus has earlier spoken against
giving scandal to those new
in the faith, and also about
forgiving offenders even if
they sin seven times each day.
Jesus points out that so long as
they nurture a seed of faith and
allow it to grow, it can bring
about marvelous fruits. Mostly
our faith journey started with
small beginnings, like the
rituals of faith. Our faith in
God can always grow, ripen,
and mature. Afterwards, if we
sincerely examine ourselves,
we can always find more room
for growth. One cannot at
any point in ones life stop in
our faith journey since faith
is never static but continuing;
never a done deal, but the
Holy Spirit conforming us
more and more to Jesus.

Second Reading

Paul reminds Timothy that the
Spirit bestowed on him is no

himself be guided by the Spirit

stir into flame the gift of God
that you have through the
imposition of my hands. For
God did not give us a spirit of
cowardice but rather of power
and love and self-control. So

bear your share of hardship for
the gospel with the strength
that comes from God.
Take as your norm the sound
words that you heard from me,

I believe in one Lord Jesus

Role of Children and Grandparents
In the 2015 Festival of Families, Pope Francis said: I would like to
stress two points regarding the family which I would like you to pay
special attention to: the children and the grandparents. Children
and young people are the future; they are the strength, those who
take us forward. They are the ones in whom we place our hope.
Grandparents are the memory of the family; they are the ones who
gave us the faith, transmitted to us the faith.
To take care of the grandparents and to take care of the children
is a sign of love. I dont know if its the greatest, but I would say the
most promising sign of love is the family, because it promises the
future. A people who does not know how to care for the grandparents
is a people without a future, because it doesnt have strength and it
doesnt have the memory that will carry it forward.
Francis concluded saying: The family is beautiful, but it is costly.
I advise one thing: Never end the day without making peace in the
family. In a family, a day cannot end at war. Defend the family!
