Lesson Title: Lorenzos Oil movie discussion Name: Kelli

Henderson

Content Area/Grade Level(s): 10th Grade Biology

Stage 1 Desired Results
Learning Goals/Objective:
Students will connect various facts to concepts we have been
studying: (Sex-linked disorders, the role of modeling in science, ethical
issues involved with scientific studies/research, and the importance of
symposia
Students will be exposed to various points of view when a tragic real
life phenomena occurs (parents reactions, government and religious
influence, medical/scientific communities approach, extended-families
involvement)
Students Understand that Essential Questions:
-Some scientific discoveries -How did modeling help solve scientific
happened by mere chance. problems?
-Clinical trials are governed by -What is the purpose of scientific
strict rules symposiums? What is an orphan
disease?
-What is the role of support groups?
-What is a clinical trial? What are
anecdotal results?
Students will know
-Financial restraints influence the actions of all parties involved: scientific
research, personal medical care, pharmaceutical actions

Students will be able to

- Identify models and explain the phenomena they are designed to
represent
-Describe the inheritance pattern of sex-linked disorders

Stage 2 Assessment Evidence

Performance Task(s): Other Evidence

Within a group, respond to a Monitor individual group work

specific set of questions related to
the movie Lorenzos Oil

Learning Activities (simply list here):

-Bellringer: We will discuss the following questions as a whole class:
What type of inheritance is Lorenzos disease?
Why is the fathers X-Chromosome guaranteed to be normal?
Should the mother have felt guilty?

-Students will be assigned to groups of 4-5 students and given a set of

questions to respond to relating to the movie Lorenzos Oil.

-Groups will discuss their set of questions among themselves and before it
is opened up to a whole class discussion

do? Sex-linked; carried on the X-
chromosome.
OPENING The trait is recessive. Since males have
only one x-chromosome, they will get

Lorenzos disease? the x-chromosome they get from their
mother. Females have another, normal,
X-chromosome (from their father), and
will therefore not get the disease (but
will be carriers if they receive a
defective X from their mother.

Why is the fathers X-chromosome

guaranteed to be normal? Because if his were defective, he would
have died in childhood (before
reproducing).

Addl Question: Should Michaela have

felt guilty that it was her gene that No. she had no control over it. ALD was

Lorenzo to have ALD? earlier; no one had told her she should
get genetic counseling.

ENGAGEMENT

Students will work in small groups to I will circulate the room monitoring and
answer an assigned set of questions (2-3 guiding individual group work
questions per group of 4-5 students)

Students will share their questions and I will illicit student responses, guide the
responses with the whole class. Other discussions, direct responses etc.
groups will have the opportunity to add
to or respond to each other.

CLOSURE

Students will complete an exit slip,

reflecting on a quote shown in the
opening scene of the movie.
