Induction
The long version
.what you signed up for

In meeting societys needs we [ members of the

institute of Chemical Engineering ] are committed to
designing processes and products that are innovative,
energy-efficient and cost-effective, and that make the
best use of scarce resources. We are committed to the
highest standards of personal and product safety. We
seek to eliminate waste and adverse environmental
effects in the development, manufacture, use and
eventual disposal of the products of society.

AGREED IN MELBOURNE AT THE SIXTH WORLD CONGRESS OF CHEMICAL

ENGINEERING, SEPTEMBER 27, 2001
PEO = Programme Educational Outcome
It is the objective of all Courses (in the Department of
Chemical and Environmental Engineering = CEE) to produce
graduates with knowledge and understanding of chemical
engineering, with the intellectual ability to innovate, with
professional skills, and with general transferable skills that
can be used in whatever career path the graduates choose
to follow.

Ultimate measure of our success not your

grades and degree classes. Where you are 5, 10,
20 years after graduation and what you have
contributed to society!

Pure chemical vs with environmental
In year 1 chemical engineering and chemical engineering
with environmental engineering are identical

with environmental is still a chem eng degree;

it has all the chem eng core modules and is accredited as
chem eng

the choice between the two courses is unlikely to affect

your employment;

its giving you some choice, look at which modules

youd rather take in year 2,3 and 4 in the course structure
100%

Year 3
Part II
Year 1 Year 2
Qualifying Part I
Year 3&4
Part II & III
100%

Blue progression
Red skills and knowledge

Dont underestimate year 1

It may not count to your degree , but the better you
understand the fundamentals and got into our mind-
set, the better your chances to shine in your final years!
In calculating the class of degree weighted
averages obtained in years two and three for the
BEng and also year four for the MEng are used:

Year 2 Year 3 Year 4

BEng 33% 67% -
MEng 20% 40% 40%
Supplementary Regulations
Since the 2012 Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) accreditation
Qualifying Year to Part 1
Part1 to Part II pass modules worth at least 100 credits
Part II to Part III remaining 20 credits no less than 30%

Failure to attain this, but still fulfilling the university requirements

leads to conversion of BEng / MEng to BSc which is unaccredited.

Once transferred, students cannot return to BEng and MEng.

To progress from Year 3 to Year 4 students must also pass the Design
Project. And have carried out an Industrial Internship of min 12
weeks.
BEng vs MEng
Your call depends on who you are and where you
want to go

You do not have to choose between BEng and MEng

until towards the end of year 2 or even 3

Therell be plenty of time for discussion

Warning: the 55% rule applies !

(if you have less than 55% average in year 2 it is no longer
Your choice. You do not qualify for MEng)
Exchange and Transfer

are not guaranteed

how easy or hard it is to get onto the exchange scheme
varies from year to year

the 55% rule applies here as well

Its a cultural rather than academic

experience

Consider alternatives other exchange

partners, travel, volunteering abroad,
working abroad
Year in industry ?

There is no formal scheme here

but if you want to defer for a year and
work that is possible; there are no credits for
it or entries on the transcript
Ive tried to address the
most frequently asked questions,

but please ask more

.. or, if that feels more comfortable,

ask your tutor
How to be a good [ CEE ] student
being a good student, graduate, alumni is not about grades
- being part of a community
- looking out for one another
- seeing the bigger picture
- having a purpose
- taking responsibility
using your skills for good (not evil)
being able to judge when the sacrifices outweigh
the benefits
standing up and being counted
your job for the next 3 or 4 years is to make sense of it
Getting there. check
be present, take part, engage your
be proactive, find out for yourself e-mail
classes are not the sole key to success daily
10 credits = 100 hours work +++++++++++++
mostly without any staff in attendance

know the rules

stay in touch, talk to people

study smart!
What happens if you dont follow our advice?

you leave with a degree (maybe)

Youll have had a harder time getting there

(maybe)
GOOD LUCK!
Enjoy your time here, its not all about studying,
its about making friends and having fun, too
