***As you write your lesson plan list the steps of the model you are using and then how you
plan to address it!

I.Teaching Standard: Solves subtraction problems using objects

I. Teaching Objective(s):

The students will solve subtraction problems two ways.

I. Introduction: This is also known as an Anticipatory Set. How are you going to
set up your lesson with the students based on the model you are using!

We have been reviewing different ways to solve subtraction problems.

Today we will look at two different ways or strategies for solving
subtraction problems.

II. Teacher Input and Activities:

Please include lecture notes and a discussion of the activities that follow the
teaching model you are describing.
I do: First I will show you the take away strategy and subtract. I will make a
train of six cubes.
Show 6 cube train
Then I will take away 2 cubes
When I take away two cube, I have 4 cubes left. So 6 minus 2 equals 4. I will
show you the equation with subtraction
Write 6-2=4 on the board, underline the 4 to emphasis the answer.
Another way we can solve 6 minus 2 is by using addition. Since Subtraction can
be used to undo addition, we can use addition as a strategy for solving a
subtraction problem. This time we start with the 2 and ask how many more we
need to from 2 to 6.
Show a train of 2 cubes
So we have 2, now we need to figure out how many we need to add to 2 to get to
6? I am going to add on cubes until I get to 6.
Add on 4 cubes
I started with 2 cubes and added on four more cubes to get to 6. Now I can
write and equation with addition.
Write 2+4=6 on the board. Underline the 4 to emphasis the answer.
To figure out the answer to 6 minus 3 first I subtracted then I added. You can
solve any subtraction with either addition or subtraction. The minus sign can
mean either take away or find the difference. Both ways give us the same
answer. Now we will practice both strategies.
We Do:
Erase the Board and write 8-7
Heres a subtraction problem 8 minus 7. We will solve this problem using both
strategies, first with subtraction and then with addition.
One strategy we use to solve 8 minus 7 is to start with 8 and figure out how
much is left when we take away 7.
Lets build a train of 8 cubes
Now we are going to take 7 cubes away.
When we take away 7 cubes how many are left?
Write 8-7=1 on the board, underline the 1 to emphasis the answer.
Another way to solve 8 minus 7 is using addition, this time we will start with 7
and figure out how many more we need to add on to get to 8.
Lets make a train of 7 cubes.
Now we will add on cubes to get to 8.
How many did you add on? Now lets write an equation using addition.
Write 7+1=8 on the board underline the 1.
Remember you can solve any subtraction problem using either subtraction or
addition.
You Do:
Here is another subtraction problem We will solve this problem using both
subtraction and addition strategy.
Write 9-2 on the board.
First we will use the subtraction strategy to solve 9 minus 2. You will start with
9 and figure out how much is left when you take away 2.
Have the students build 9 with their trains and take away 2 Once the students
have solved
Write 9-2=7 on the board; underline the 7 to emphasis the answer.
The other way to solve 9 minus 2 is by using addition You start with two and
figure out how many you need to add to 2 to get 9.
Give the students time to solve this problem.
How many did you add? What equation can you write?
Write 2+7=9 on the board underline the 7.
Talk with you partner, which strategy did you think was easier to solve?
III. Checking for Understanding Activities: What are you planning on doing to check
to see if the students are understanding! Explain here!
Turn and Talk- The children all have a learning partner, I have left you a seating
chart that shows learning partners. The students turn to their partner and
share the information the teacher asks of them. While they are sharing walk
around and listen to their discussions, offer feedback to the students.

IV. Guided Practice Assignment: What are you doing with the students in class!
We Do:
Erase the Board and write 8-7
Heres a subtraction problem 8 minus 7. We will solve this problem using both

figure out how many more we need to add on to get to 8.
Lets make a train of 7 cubes.
Now we will add on cubes to get to 8.
How many did you add on? Now lets write an equation using addition.
Write 7+1=8 on the board underline the 1.
Remember you can solve any subtraction problem using either subtraction or

You Do:

Write 9-2 on the board.
First we will use the subtraction strategy to solve 9 minus 2. You will start with 9
and figure out how much is left when you take away 2.

Give the students time to solve this problem.
How many did you add? What equation can you write?
Write 2+7=9 on the board underline the 7.
Talk with you partner, which strategy did you think was easier to solve?

V. Independent Practice: (homework?)

You Do- Now you will practice using these strategies in your workbook, you will
complete page 35, 1-8. You will first use the subtraction strategy then the
addition strategy to solve the problems.

VI. Closure: How are you planning to end the lesson

How are you linking this lesson with tomorrows lesson!
Closure- The students will complete their workbook lessons, when they are
finished I will check their workbook, and go over any problems that they had
incorrect. When they are complete ask them what two strategies did we use
today to solve subtraction problems?
